The second wave never escaped the idea of something "natural" underlying the "distortions" of patriarchy which led smoothly into the worst abuses of cultural feminism and smuggled all kinds of gender essentialism into supposedly anti-essentialist work.

For cis feminism, explaining the psychological mechanisms by which cis women are forced to accept their place in patriarchy was a route to helping women liberate themselves from those mechanisms. Explaining queer people within those same mechanisms was explaining us away. Telling us we're not real.

Social constructionism, contrary to reactionary fucks like Pinker, does not collapse if humans aren't perfect blank slates. Even Marx gestured broadly at species being somewhere underneath the mode of production.

I don't think that's necessarily a contradiction. In theory, ego-death would lead to understanding that all are deserving of dignity and all have worth, including the self.

So if you had low self-worth, deflating the ego would necessarily raise your consciousness of your own self-worth!
