Trauma time, I'm not okay.
Story time, kind of. It'll be vague. I've kept these feelings a little over a year and now they've resurfaced. I don't want to be quiet about it. But I'll still be professional and not name names. A little over a year ago, a friend reached out wanting me to illustrate their book. They knew my art well. Meaning my style also. They promised I was absolutely the one. I was so honored. They had a large following and are very well known. They also had a publisher they were reaching out to. This was going to be big. I had them sign the contract. I worked on samples for them. Until they told me they actually didn't like my style after all. And unless I could completely change it, they wanted out of the contract. This news arrived later that evening the day I posted about my grandma's death. It was a bad day indeed. They later picked a new illustrator and invited me to like their page. It may have been an "invite all friends" option. I understand that. It still felt like a slap in the face. They vague posted to their followers announcing this book about how "It was meant to be how it happened." meaning how they got their new illustrator. Meaning by hurting me. I was the result of them finding someone else. This same illustrator got the job of my dreams recently. I knew they would. I had a feeling. Life is funny that way. And it hurts all the same. I am not upset at this illustrator and I'm even happy for them. The trauma is getting to me, I know. I don't even know if they know about me. I understand art contracts don't work out all the time. I even remained friends with the contract holder until their fake allyship towards Indigenous folks began to really show. This wasn't about me in my decision to block them. But I would be lying if I said it didn't help my mental health in doing so. It's messy. Being an artist is both physically and metaphorically. Things happen. Contracts don't work out. And things can continue to get complicated. I am not okay. This will hurt for awhile. Please don't ask me names. I didn't do this to out anyone. I have just been really needing to get this off my chest...
