A very conservative coded opinion I’ve now done a complete 180 on is just: instead of spending money on useless “economic development” funds or permanent welfare the government should just directly hand out piles of cash to people in deprived areas to move somewhere there’s jobs.

“this is not who we are” is an aspirational and prophetic phrase. that’s how it’s used. i bet even when it was the prophet jeremiah trying to get israelites to stop worshipping lesser gods that’s how it was used. no one thinks it’s literally descriptive. pointing out it’s not is not clever. enough.
