He coulda been any number of things. He could have been unemployed and eaten goober grape straight from the jar off a shoehorn. He didn't deserve that. No one does. No one being harmed by ICE deserves what is happening to them. NO ONE.
New: Alex Pretti, the man killed by the Trump-Vance mob of agents was an outdoorsmen, a mountain biker, an ICU nurse who "would go out of his way to help," say Veterans Affairs colleagues.

Cheerful. Funny. Gentle.

And still, per sources, Trump officials are urging staff to call him a "terrorist."
DHS Shooting Victim in Minneapolis Was a ‘Sweet’ and ‘Principled Person’
Zeteo spoke with two doctors who worked with Alex Pretti, a nurse who is the latest victim of Trump’s violent invasion of Minnesota.

Bill Kristol to the left of most Democrats in Congress.

Incredible.
Also, may I say that I don’t agree with people saying ICE and CBP need “more training.” They’re doing exactly what this administration has trained them to—impose a reign of fear in blue cities. They don’t need more training. They need to be ripped up root and branch.

One court decision, two different headlines.

Guardian on the left, NY Times on the right. Which one more directly conveys information and the stakes to the reader?

The story of GTFS is so cool, it really captures the vibe and hope around tech in late 2000s/10s

A public servant notices how hard it is to navigate transit in new cities, finds a couple peers who still get Fridays for side projects at Google, and they create a data standard that 100+ countries use

@theeferringer.bsky.social the city of Cleveland ( @courier429.bsky.social and i) asks that you use antirender next time you go in front of the city planning commission (& maybe throw in something if you do it w/o AI).
Loving this. "Antirender" engine converts architects presentation drawings into the likely reality of the designs :)

Has anybody put together a list of best practices for openness in government software beyond open licensing? Like public uptime tracking, a public backlog, and a public release history? I have a loose collection of these things in my head, but I bet somebody's done better work on this.

Transparently, I was pretty anxious about filling the politics section. Not because there isn't plenty to choose from, but because my anxious and thought-filled mind didn't know how I was going to summarize what's been going on in Cleveland. And then I got a text message. 1/🧵

I dream of a day when corporations have to reapply for every tax break, contract, and grant every six months, with a requirement that it is the CEO who must complete the paperwork, and attest under penalty of law that they personally did so.
The shutdown was an excuse, not a reason, to go after SNAP.

SNAP recipients have to re-apply either every 6 months or year. Onerous process, with almost no fraud.

There are no shutdown-related requirement for SNAP renewal. But it would predictably result in low-income families going hungry.
Brooke Rollins says on Newsmax SNAP participants will have to re-apply for the program.

Details are still unclear.
