"academic publishing is dominated by profit-oriented, multinational companies for whom scientific knowledge is a commodity to be sold back to the academic community who created it... The dominant four collectively generated... $12 billion in profits between 2019 and 2024."

Jos ei usko ilmastonmuutokseen, niin miksi on niin kova tarve hävittää todisteet siitä?

Pimeää, kyynistä ja tuhoisaa menoa.

The huge inflation in the usage of these words in scientific literature is appalling. Science should have better self-esteem and not fall into LinkedIn-speech (although the trend started much before LinkedIn) to justify their work.

Not saying that I've been any better at this.
Scientists are increasingly hyping up their findings.

This is a seismic gut punch to the weather enterprise.

It is impossible to overstate how important @unidata.bsky.social is in implementing many datasets/libraries (LDM, netCDF, THREDDS, metPy) we currently use in meteorological research & operations.

I'm happy to share that I've completed my PhD in meteorology!🥳

On Tuesday, I successfully defended my thesis "Modelling and measuring transport processes within urban surface layer at high spatio-temporal resolutions" at the Faculty of Science of @helsinki.fi .

Thanks to everyone involved!

Dear publishers,

By clicking "Download PDF", I don't mean that I want to open the article in your slow, impractical, and overall just useless online viewer/reader. I just want to get the PDF.

Sincerely,
I think almost every researcher in the world.

I’m happy to share that I’ve started in a new position as Research Associate at Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH! 🇨🇭

I'm working on the UrbanAIR project (www.urbanair-project.eu), focusing on urban heat and clouds, using remote sensing and data driven methods.

I finally submitted my PhD thesis "Modelling and measuring transport processes within the urban surface layer at high spatio-temporal resolutions" for examination a week ago on Tuesday.

This also marks the end of my time at Univ. of Helsinki, I'm currently spending my remaining holidays in India!

Check out our new preprint on Geoscientifc Model Development on SLUrb, a single-layer urban canopy model for PALM. SLUrb allows for representing urban surfaces with non-building-resolving grids in PALM, extending PALM's urban capabilities to O(10 m) resolutions.

PALM-SLUrb v24.04: A single-layer urban canopy model for the PALM model system – Model description and first evaluation
Abstract. Urban areas are recognized as critical zones for climate research due to the high number of people living in these areas and their significant impacts on local and regional climates. However...

The energy balance closure of the model can be written like this. This represents all the flows of energy from or to the model and all the places where it can be stored within the model. The sum of all the flows and storages should be zero, i.e. the energy should be conserved.

After N hours (where N is far greater integer than I would be comfortable with) of debugging, my single-layer urban surface model for the PALM model system (a LES model, see palm.muk.uni-hannover.de) is 2 W/m^2 from full energy balance closure. So close!

Recently, there hasn't been much social media friendly stuff to post on my work as I've been implementing the remaining technical aspects and fixing bugs of my single-layer urban surface model implementation for the LES model PALM. Now I'm finally able proceed to sensitivity testing & evaluation!
