I'm not surprised, as it's the culmination of the undervaluing (and disrespect, even) of translation as a skill. The amount of shitty translations I've seen recently is starting to really anger me and it puts me off using services.
yup.

"More important than the technological change is the change in a social permission structure"

"businesses have been hearing months of hype and pontification about AGI and mass automation, which has created the cover to justify slashing rates and accepting “good enough” automation output"
AI Killed My Job: Translators
Few industries have been hit by AI as hard as translation. Rates are plummeting. Work is drying up. Translators are considering abandoning the field, or bankruptcy. These are their stories.

Reposting this for more leads - please, ANY contacts in the licensing dept for the Science Museum?? I've waited months for email replies, and calling the numbers I've been given just gets hold music, answerphones and occassionally weird calls where they cut out or it's just white noise.

Has anyone had dealings with the Science Museum picture library recently & have any alternative contact info? I've had zero luck getting a response from them at the general email (it's been months since my first email) & my request is getting urgent :/ www.scienceandsociety.co.uk/contact.asp 🗃️

There's something ironic about a country so preoccupied with Remembrance courting Nazi policies so openly.

Buckling of commercial models alongside maturing of community-led efforts promises major shifts, says Caroline Edwards (@theblochian.bsky.social).

L'enfer c'est les autres.
crazy how much this bugs me now that someone pointed it out. if i worked at the white house, i would find this ugly, but not as annoying as i do now. ignorance is really bliss bc they more you learn, the more you just walk around thinking "collar gap" and "kerning is off."

Librarians told 404 Media they're being inundated with new pitches for AI library tech and catalogs are being flooded with AI slop books.

But more broadly, AI maximalism across society is supercharging the ideological war on libraries, schools, government workers, and academics.

My favourite part about living in the UK is that fireworks are not regulated to hell and I can get sparklers whenever I please.

(From experience: stricter fireworks regulation tends to make things worse. Much worse.)

Apologies to anyone expecting us to be at the Tales Of The Weird event at the British Library this weekend, but in support of the PCS industrial action, we’ve decided not to cross the picket line. Will and I are both former librarians, and want to show support to the striking staff.

Some of our Reading Rooms will be closed between 27 October and 9 November due to planned strike action at our St Pancras site, and there may be other short notice disruption.

The strangest and most frustrating thing about my 30s approaching is *feeling* my mind starting to slow down. Cant memorise things nearly as fast anymore, no magical improvement with new languages, no easy recall of whatever Ive recently read.

Im sure you're all laughing, but it's a bit unsettling!

Words being printed and bound into book format doesn't convey sacredness upon them. Some books are devoid of value and it would be fine if every last copy disappeared from the earth. Weed your little free libraries. Toss that shit in the trash.

The best part about being a non-native speaker of English is that I can show up to all the classic plays and productions of classic literature with 0 idea of what's about to hit me. Experiencing theatre the way God intended.

Pentagon demands journalists pledge to not obtain unauthorized material
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is imposing strict new rules that would severely limit the ability of journalists to report on the Pentagon.
