The whole starving artist is a terrible, awful, truth for too many. Self-included. Like obviously not literal, but only because I get SNAP. I am also struggling to get on disability benefits. I don't know how most folks make it without aid--the same five bucks travel through many artists' hands.

Very, very few comic book creators can survive on just the money they make from comics. It is an inherently unstable job and it is only getting worse as time goes on. Don't ever be embarrassed or ashamed of needing another job so that you can keep making comics.
Not being able to make a living just from your art doesn't make you a failure as an artist, it just means you're a totally normal working artist.

Margie was, though she'd never describe it like that. The deal was that she had to find a real job by her 18th birthday and start paying "rent" or get kicked out of the house. She chose the latter, because she thought it'd leave her with more time to make music.
