I made a South Jersey feed, because the Philly feed is nice but Philadelphians will be quick to tell you that just because I can see the Linc from my neighborhood, and it's closer to City Hall than Chestnut Hill is, doesn't mean it's a Philadelphia suburb: bsky.app/profile/did:...
Apparently "even Woodbury NJ" (pop. ~10K) is a signifier of some sort. share.inquirer.com/qb7EPB

I would have expected more, earlier out of Woodbury (which, ahem, prided itself on being the gayest town in NJ at one point) but whatever, I'll take it
β€˜A turning point’: Anti-ICE protests reach the Philadelphia suburbs
In the wake of the fatal shooting of Renee Good, anti-ICE protests spread into the Philly suburbs β€” suggesting the breadth of opposition to Trump's immigration agenda.

My thoughts on that went something along the lines of:

* they were idiots

* unless they were just funneling money to him on purpose

* but why would anyone do that now?

so now I'm just vaguely confused by that.

Bad art for good usually focuses on environmental messaging but right now there’s…other messaging to focus on. And I think the more of that we have around the city the merrier, wouldn’t you agree?

So come on over on Jan 27th, I’ll give you snacks and beer and art supplies.

And Voorhees has a big trad shopping mall which has its own issues. Its only successful section is an added-on modern mixed-use area that is still restaurant/retail, but which has a nightmare of a car road and parking area where the pedestrian mall should be. But I guess that worked better. πŸ˜”

I'm curious about what was supposed to have gone in that big office building. Was there a tenant originally, was this to be a company town? Or was it just spec?

Voorhees is a township; its original downtown/density calved off a hundred years ago, so a place like this struggles with critical mass.

it's really just a glorified strip mall. I don't know how well occupied the residential floors are (there are clearly *some* people living there), but it's kinda sad because it could have been someplace.

But it's served by one (1) bus route, and is kinda out in the boonies as far as big employers.

northern corner, where the two parallel buildings meet a big... office building? It's vacant AFAICT.

It's all very well-maintained; the medical network landscapes it beautifully, there are potted shrubs with seasonal decorations and it's a pleasant place to walk around (once you get inside), but

But, again: failed. So we parked in the nearly-empty ground level of the parking garage, and were directed through the breezeway in the middle of the building. No pedestrian crossing, but there was no traffic. But also no wheelchair ramp. Apparently outsiders would have entered up toward the

So the medical office I was taking the person to is inside the pedestrian mall, where previous ones have been in those boomerang buildings. All the ground-floor offices have "EMPLOYEE ENTRANCE ONLY" on the outside-facing doors because these would have been resident-serving businesses to walk to.

The two parallel buildings below the garage are similarly mixed-use, and there's another parking garage on the other side of them (with elevated walkways to the residential floors). I can't find a Streetview picture of the central area because it's pedestrian-only. Neat! Except it failed.

Previously, I've been to the boomerang-shaped buildings in the upper just-right-of-middle. They're seven- or eight-story residential buildings, with commercial space on the ground floor. Obviously, started out retail, but it's a all medical offices now. That's a parking garage inside the curve.

Today's medical driving involved a visit to a complex I've been to before, but it was weirder than usual and made me wonder again about the history of this place.

It's very obviously a failed mixed-use district which makes me sad: I would like to live in a (functioning) place like this! 🧡

I always wondered if this apartment complex in Wichita was supposed to be "La River" (probably, though weird) or "LA River" (probably not, but it amused me to imagine so).
There is an apartment or condo complex near us named Narraticon and every time we pass it we all argue about whether it's a convention for fiction authors or storytelling TTRPG's.

Meanwhile, in Wichita, next to a marketly non-paved (unless you count a lot of riprap) waterway:

Pre 2015: Arkansas River (pronounced Ar-Kansas in Wichita) at the end of my block

2015-2017: Mullica, crossing which gave me a much-needed HORIZON (the Atlantic!) when I moved from the prairie to the lovely/claustrophobic Pine Barrens

Now: the Delaware, a little further than the end of my block.
My favorite Twitter prompt was "RT this with your home river," so reskeet this with your home river.

"Haystacks" vs. "spiders" confirms all my priors about US vs. Australia. πŸ˜†
When I was growing up in Australia, a popular party food was chocolate and peanut butter "spiders." Oh, I see now that Americans might call them "haystacks"? It's like, fried noodles, peanut butter, and chocolate. Not much to look at but yum!

Skywatch Blue, which might be having some glitches: I saw it too which is weird because I didn't have that label even turned on.

(tl;dr: Trump has been trying to end the independence of the Fed and resorting to video message is *very* unusual for Mr. Powell. If Trump gets away with this, we're in for some [even] wild[er] economic times ahead)

I did find a bunch of dubious Amazon links, yup. And I am pretty sure Cherie will only block people who are doing it to say "see you can get them anytime," not that she wants an exclusive on it.

The Thomas Lee one is pretty nifty but backordered, so my sister/wallet is safe so far. Thanks!

Okay but have you considered: helpful pink alligator rug links would actually be helpful for people who didn't know they needed a pink alligator rug until they saw that. πŸ˜†

(that is AMAZING and my sister absolutely needs one)

It will never not be funny to me that Outback is Texan and Texas Roadhouse is Hoosier.

I was surprised to learn that Jersey Mike's is actually New Jersey based.

Yeah, they were very low for going that fast but I am *right* across from the Linc so they're still at their lowest here.
