Living in L-Space

Eternal energy pixie icon by Graham Higgins.
I feel like I should switch over to the short track to watch the NL skaters, but I’m just fascinated by this women’s half-pipe final. Also, I doubt I’m going to see anything better than Lollobrigida’s gutsy second gold medal win on the 3k today.

A viewer commented on the snowboarders’ baggy trousers, and the BBC commentator explained that if the trousers got tighter, its be harder to bend in them, and then you may as well, “put jam on your shoes and invite your trousers down for tea.”

It’s not only the Aussie commentators who’ve got it. 😂

Shame on the IOC for disqualifying this Ukrainian athlete, while allowing Russians (with links to the military) to compete as “neutral” athletes.
BREAKING Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych is disqualified from the Winter Olympics after refusing to back down over his banned helmet, which depicts victims of his country's war with Russia

All academics should read this asap, it’s comedy gold:
I'd watch a muppet show movie where the muppets infiltrate an academic conference.

Dutch commentators further wrecked by no orange on the podium. Francesca Lollobrigida, ITA, 35yrs laid down the most powerful 3000m to smash the Olympic speedskating record. 😍 Apparently, the Italian federation fully supported her in her wish to return to elite sport after becoming a mother. 🥇

Dutch commentators completely wrecked by the sight of a Belgian being faster than one of the Dutch skaters. 😄 No matter what happens in the 3k now, the podium won’t be all orange.

The Dutch are fully spending 45 mins talking about skating, so I’m watching curling on the BBC instead.

Commentator 1, “Do you remember what that contraption is called?”
Commentator 2, “Contraption.”

I fear Instant Expert status may be harder to achieve, here.
February 7, 2026 at 3:01 PM
I just spent an hour becoming an Instant Expert in slopestyle and I can’t wait for a new Olympic sport where participants get points for creatively smacking whining drones out of the air.

Litter-picking with the Leiden Singelpark volunteers and this kitten would’ve been in the catch of the day, if I’d been allowed to pop him in my bin bag. 😸 His owner is training Nimbus to wear a leash so he doesn’t bother the wildlife. Today was his first outing! #cats

There are limits to what weather the Dutch can cycle in. Today’s code red up north for black ice was definitely one. Of course, someone will always try. Briefly, according to reports. Very, very briefly.

It’s better to go ice skating on the street instead! Video ⬇️
Schaatsen op straat
Code rood zorgt ook voor leuke beelden. In het noorden schaatsen ze over fietspaden.

Mon Rovîa was just as good as promised @jamadoria.bsky.social Gentle voice, deep lyrics, and quite a lot of fun. And maybe being in an ex-church makes the crowd sing extra pretty. :)

Neil Gaiman has come out from under his rock, to the relief of the innocent creepy crawlies living there. If you already blocked him, please check you aren’t still following him. Unfollow first, then block, or else you’re still following.
It's a small thing but someone will be watching these metrics

Neil Gaiman is crawling out of his bog two years after sexual assault allegations to play the sweet old fantasy uncle again -- complete with name-dropping that book you like & his twee "make good art" catchphrase -- all in order to (of course) sell you his upcoming book. Don't you dare fall for it.

Half an hour of counting garden birds on a grey day:

1x great tit
2x long-tailed tits
3x blue tits
1x tree creeper
2x jackdaws

Flying over, and not ever going to land to be counted because I’m beneath its notice, a stork!

Indian food isn’t so much a thing in the Netherlands but I’ve just, 1. located the Indian street food stall at the market, and 2. located the Indian market goers in #Leiden. The fresh samosa I just ate brought a tear to my eye. Sheer joy, of course.

Only a minority of car roofs were clear of snow so far today. Either drivers have forgotten, or never knew, that snow counts as an unsecured load. If you get caught, the rich people's permission slip, a.k.a. fine, will cost you close to €400 or €500. That's if physics doesn't get you first.

5k #running report: today’s theme, adjusting the programme if you feel like it. This morning I pulled in a longer run from week 2 (making this week 1.5 now?) because I’m feeling better but really because it gave me more time to enjoy the light dusting of snow here in #Leiden

5k #running report: We’ve had fan favourite, repeat a week. Now it’s time to welcome, go back a week! I started Week 2 last week but was sent to bed by a flu-like thing. If the week you’re on is too much, it’s ok to drop back. Ok, Week 1, it is.

Pick up the nearest book. Turn to page 42, post the second sentence.

Taryn had told the doctors that, for the past week or so, she would wake up to a trilling, like the last cicada of summer.
Pick up the nearest book. Turn to page 42, post the second sentence.

The water smashed itself forever and forever as the boat rushed on.
Pick up the nearest book. Turn to page 42, post the second sentence.

Feeling the drop in temperature while running this morning. 1°C with a nice hazy sun over the canal.
But my thoughts are with my friend who’s started the alternative Elfstedentocht. 200km skating on the Weißensee, Austria, starting this morning in -7°C!

#running report: it’s the return of old fan favourite, repeat a week! Fourth week in, I’ve started week 2 of the programme and I’ve added lunges to my old physio exercises. Are we bored? YES! Are we going to continue in a sensible manner and repeat as many weeks as we need to prevent injury? yes

The sun shone today! Sadly, no highland cows to be seen on Bussum’s heath this afternoon, only their hoof prints.

Last night’s running dream was me deciding there was time to grab a flat white. But where? Sketchbook, best coffee in Wellington! A bit far from Leiden… but it’s ok, I was already by the library. (Still closed for earthquake proofing, at least my brain got that right.)
Woke up before coffee ofc :(
