Chapter 1 Artimetrius rolls a fifteen-carat rough diamond across the backs of his blue knuckles. Blue? No, no, that can’t be right. He glances up at his human anatomy poster. His eyes follow the temperature chart down to the metric for frostbite. Mmm, yeah blue isn’t a normal color for the human suit. He looks up at the thermostat. Six degrees. Huh. He’ll have to adjust that. He sets the diamond down and swans to the fireplace, aggravation lacing his lithe steps. He reignites the flame with a snap of his fingers before settling in his Jacobean parlor chair again. He’s had nearly five centuries to get used to taking care of this garment of squishy wet muscle and tissue and he absolutely hates it.

On 9/11 we blanket honor over innocent lives lost in senseless attacks. This 9/11 is no different, just adds more faces. "It’s disturbing how incidents like this can be downplayed depending on the victims. Political violence should be condemned universally, not through a partisan lens."

I am queer and black and HATED by many Charlie Kirk supporters, but an "eye for an eye" isn't the way forward. Do we want peace and equality at all? Vengeful violence just perpetuates a diseased, systemic hatred toward otherness, which hinders that goal. Can we pls stop this cycle...somewhere?

I've seen college grads use gen AI. Imagine wasting prime years of young adulthood getting a creative arts degree, then offloading every creative endeavor to a robot that's inaccurate 90% of the time. Just throw your money directly into a frat house firepit next time.

Chloe squeezes the locket. Yes, it does sound out there, but a guardian watching over her is exactly what Chloe needs right now, and something about the locket does feel safe. An energy flows from it that wraps around Chloe like a warm hug when she’s in trouble. She’s felt that hug since the locket first hung around her neck, but could never pinpoint the source of the feeling. Maybe it’s from knowing the shared jewelry also laid against her mom and Elliotte’s skin. But maybe…it’s something else? Something sentient. Ancient. Maybe Chloe is sensing the light energy Sadie spoke of. The locket warms against her chest now, tugging at something deep within her as if in confirmation. “Sadie might be right.”

Chloe doesn’t enjoy spending this much time with Mariah. Some people like bubbly personalities. Chloe likes bubbly personalities the same way she likes shaking up a soda right before she drinks it. As an introvert, she likes to be quiet, indoors and left alone. But there’s an undeniable compulsion to be close to Mariah now. Sometimes she wonders if Mariah is dragging her to the center of her social life for the same reason Chloe feels compelled to be dragged; a deep-seated loneliness and otherness that pinches at her core.

The cold siphons the heat of the moment and takes with it every joyful spark. Chloe’s head swoons. Something is wrong. She wants to pull away. Part of her soul is screaming to let go of him, but another part is locked in like roots reaching into slab cement. No nutrients here. Nothing to drink from. Just a trap to dry her out. Suddenly, the magnetic pull reverses. He’s changed to her, from a miracle out of Grecian mythology to a curse from Norse folklore. A dragon, a sprite, a clever monster… Chloe goes numb. Her veins pump nothing but liquid ice. She tries to breathe but can’t. Her lips rip away from his like ocean waves recoiling from a beach. She feels weak.
