Join us at Cornell as a post-doc working on enhanced geothermal systems! Lots of interesting work at the intersection of engineering and economics that will benefit from a new NSF grant and earlier investments in CUBO (sustainablecampus.cornell.edu/living-labor...).

Did you know that the COVID-19 pandemic caused ⚡⚡⚡ lighting ⚡⚡⚡ strikes to decline a lot across the globe?
Why?
Less travel ➡️ fewer anthropogenic aerosols in the air ➡️ fewer clouds ➡️ less lightning.
So when the world paused during the pandemic, storms got notably less intense.
Cool, eh?

President Trump has warned CEOs of some of the top U.S. automakers that they had better not raise car prices because of tariffs
This gets weirder and weirder as economic policy. Tax imports but don’t allow domestic producers to raise prices? Next stop: production quotas?

I'll point out that even threatened tariffs can cause price increases as firms accelerate orders/demand in the face of constant supply.
And the year starts with an inflationary bang. May be partly exacerbated by seasonal issues--but those same issues also artificially muted earlier months.
Core CPI annual rates:
1 month: 5.2%
3 months: 3.6%
6 months: 3.4%
