This has lost me thousands of pounds (not to mention book sales) and put me in a state of terror and panic. I urge anyone thinking of moving their list from Substack, or wanting to know more about how Substack works, to read it....
I'm not going back to Substack. I will continue to post my newsletters from Ghost. But I did have to get back in there, just to post this and let people who thought I'd vanished know about this utter nightmare: substack.com/home/post/p-...
An Explanation (Which I Would Be Very Grateful If You Took The Time To Read)

Pooka! Never saw them. Wish I had, they were wonderful. Would love to have seen Natasha Lea Jones live too. I think she’s a genius.
So, musical artists you desperately wish you’d seen live:

Kate Bush (failed to get tickets for Before The Dawn).
ABBA (parents wouldn’t buy me a ticket)
Sandy Denny (hadn't discovered her then)
Radiohead (still hoping)
Caravan

Have seen almost everyone else, in some incarnation…

I would love to have seen Seconds Out era Genesis though, and Space Ritual era Hawkwind. And I never got to see Pink Floyd, which is baffling to me. Oh, and early Stranglers.

Well, as a young kid, both Daktari and that amazing barrel of ‘60s kitsch, Batman.
November 14, 2025 at 7:25 PM
Same! Cheryl Miller as Paula in Daktari. I was approximately 5 years old. I wasn’t wrong, she was stunning!

Watched Mr Burton the other night and loved it. Tremendous performances all round. And I could watch Aimee-Ffion Edwards all day long.

Watched Last Christmas again last night. It was just what I needed. I don’t care what the critics thought, I loved it. Is it cheesy? Yes. who cares? It’s a feel good film, something we surely need more of these days. Emilia Clarke is just so adorable and gorgeous and Henry Golding is great.

Brilliant stuff. Cliff’s best track and Donna Fielding, my all-time crush, on Kenny Everett. What’s not to like?

These books on Bob Haberfield’s art are incredible.

I’ve never seen this! Didn’t know Alan Garner had written it.
DRAMARAMA SPOOKY - THE KEEPER (1983): Alan (The Owl Service) Garner wrote this brilliant episode of the supernatural anthology for kids. Two ghost hunters bite off more than they can chew during an overnight vigil at a haunted cottage...
A chilling, atmospheric episode with a hell of an ending.

Great comment from Alan Garner.
Love Alan Garner. What he said about children's books has always stayed with me - this is from the inside flap of 'Red Shift' (1973) which I happen to have in front of me.

"It's not a minor form. It's a superb discipline which makes me write a better book."
November 8, 2025 at 8:17 PM
Whenever I go into a bookshop these days there are no Alan Garner books to be seen. And that worries me a great deal. I sometimes feel like planting copies, just in case. That goes for Michael Moorcock too.
Alan Garner, 91 today. Rewiring children's imaginations, making their lives a little bit more wonderfully strange since 1960. I suspect his work will continue to do so for a long, long time to come.
November 8, 2025 at 8:16 PM
Now this really made me laugh, which I’m rather grateful for at the moment.
That's good value.
I think they can sort unwanted children out too for just £20 👍
Could be very handy, post-Halloween.

Happy birthday today to Alan Garner, unquestionably one of my favourite authors. I first read The Weirdstone of Brisingamen aged about 9 and it changed everything for me. And he’s still doing it, with Treacle Walker. Sending much love Alan!
Alan Garner is 91 today. A brilliant and unique author. His books have inspired and enchanted me since I read The Weirdstone of Brisingamen at the age of 11. Here is my treasured copy of Red Shift. The Le Guin quote on the cover is wholly accurate.

Oh good! Another imminent addition to my Tom Cox collection. Been out of the loop recently - life stuff - so am happy about this. If you haven’t read Tom’s books, please do. Stephen Fry is not wrong.
Publication Day for me today. Finally, 6 months after it was originally supposed to be out. What a battle it's been - due to the terrible behaviour of my ex-publishers - to stop this being completely lost.

Emotion of "THANK FUCK" has rarely been more strongly felt.
