Politicians and the rightwing press talk about integration in a selective and politically loaded way. The reality is quite different, says Guardian columnist Andy Beckett

I’m not playing this stupid game with Reform or any of their multimillionaire groupies, vilifying immigrants and moaning about the benefits bill from their tax havens and Dubai penthouses. Then lying about what they said and why.

Reform is a racist party. Relying on racist votes for power. End of.

As good as the universal backlash to Sir Jim Radcliffe's comments on Britain being "colonised by immigrants" is, why only now? Why only to him? We have had hints and outright racism from politicians, the media and individuals for years. Where has the rolled newspaper on the nose been til now?

I’m not an Arsenal fan but it must be amazing having Spurs as your arch rivals. Just a comedy clown-car of a football club, designed to pick you up when you’re a bit down. Like what NUFC were in the mid to late 00s but with seemingly everything in their favour. Hilarious.

Get the open-top bus out. Sunderland have won the Remembering Things From 16 Years Ago Cup.
Sixteen years after Sunderland infamously beat Liverpool 1-0 as a shot deflected in off a Reds-branded beach ball, the northern fans remember 😅

I’ve always abhorred the phrase “speaking as a father” when the issue of the protection of the rights of women and young girls comes up. As if somehow you’ve no conception of empathy for young women if you’re not a father. Turns out that even some fathers of daughters don’t.

This is now the standard line, parroted by the national broadcaster. It goes unchallenged.

There is no wide debate. It’s just people like Farage saying there’s a problem and the BBC agreeing with him.

An apology is where you retract what you said and say “I appreciate that what I said is wrong and I’m sorry for the harm it caused”.
Not “I’m sorry that some people were offended by what I said”.

There’s a whole world of difference.

Do we just want to be irate? Or is it that we think that sort of rhetoric feeds into the exact mentality of those Labour supposedly stand against? I'm not angry, I'm just bored and depressed at our politicans constantly punching down, and a load of people cheering for it.

We really should be asking ourselves why one rich twat’s racist opinion can become headline news in this country

While the perspectives of thousands of volunteers welcoming migrants in their communities & mixed migrant/British families are never heard?

Good news for Reform in County Durham as they can afford to reclassify all the unisex toilets and put out some press releases about flags.
Fab announcement from Govt today & I’m sure DCC is too. The cash has already allowed the DCC Admin to slightly reduce the planned Council Tax increase which is imminent. I'm hopeful that further funding from the Labour Govt promised in the coming years will allow us to see more positive changes.

Thx, and I added:

Overall these proposals are disgusting and completely antithetical to British values of tolerance, kindness and decency. They pander to the worst instincts; policy shouldn't be driven by the racist agenda of Reform UK.
