This is a brilliant and important paper that deserves wide attention — relevant for political theorists, political scientists, and civil–military scholars alike. It tackles one of the most neglected questions in the study of democratic backsliding: its relationship with the military.
🧵 I'm excited to share that my article "Democratic Backsliding and the Limits of Civilian Control of the Military" has been accepted @thejop.bsky.social.

It answers the question "how ought militaries act when civilian leaders turn on democratic institutions?"

Just spoke to @euronews.com about the Trump deal to end the Gaza war. Here are the main points I made 🧵:

1. Trump should have formally brought in the Palestinian Authority as part of both the negotiations and the implementation.

Very excited to share this year’s Ronald Dworkin Colloquium lineup.

@ucl.ac.uk has been running this series in legal & political philosophy since 1998, when Dworkin founded it. Still going strong.

This is a brilliant paper. A highly recommended reading it for everyone who is interested in political change, political imagination, and discussions on feasibility.
Hallvard is in @ethicsjournal.bsky.social !!! Feasibility, Sandven argues, is superfluous or moralised in normative discourse 🤔🤔 www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...

I wrote this back in March but I think it's important now more than ever to understand competitive authoritarianism--and the concrete steps that can be used to fight back against it. It's going to be difficult, but it's not a lost cause--and the fight is worth it. I explain the best strategies here:
Is American democracy doomed?
How to understand the concept of "competitive authoritarianism" and why it's crucial to push back now to avoid it.

One puzzle I’m working through is how authoritarian political movements impact civil society orgs. We’re getting more familiar with what authoritarianism will do to them when in power. It’s a top-down theory of change. But does the underlying political & social movement have an independent impact?
