After a week where I felt like the pit of despair in my stomach kept sinking deeper, it seems especially valuable to reflect on some actions and moments of joy and rejuvenation.

Here's to some things that helped me persist despite the horrors 💫

The REST Act will empower local officials to keep their communities affordable by making it easier to opt into rent stabilization AND allowing localities to expand who is covered.

Democratic lawmakers seek changes to rent regulation
A new bill would amend New York’s rent stabilization law, eliminating a vacancy study requirement and giving more power to localities to set standards.

Here's my piece on Trump's illegal pause of federal spending.

Trump proposed a sweeping order and the WH privately sent memos to begin carrying it out while publicly walking it back.

A judge has temporarily stayed the action.

I talk about what's at stake.

Trump’s Proposed Sweeping Spending Pause Would Harm Americans
The administration’s proposed action appears to be illegal and could halt funding for programs for child care, school lunches, and rental assistance.

There are different approaches to *more* chairs, though.

We don't have to play a game. We don't have to concede to a competition between advantage (privilege) and (systemic) disadvantage where we provide more choice to the privileged and hope that trickles down to everyone getting a seat.
Another way to think about housing supply is as a game of musical chairs with some people who have advantages (eg, speed, wealth) and some who are disadvantaged (eg, slower, poorer).

With fewer chairs than people, slower folks end up losing out. With *more* chairs than people, everyone gets a seat.

Bluesky academics, lets get to know each other! Quote & tell us: 1) a project you are working on & 2) an odd idea/theory you aren’t working on but keep thinking about

1) good cause eviction + rental housing stability
2) SNAP churn and recipient housing mobility

1. Cash transfers to child welfare-impacted parents
2. CPS hotline screener decisionmaking (they're fully remote w/ so much power!)

2) Do state fairs help bridge the urban-rural divide?
