I am and will continue to do my best to track and talk about what Trump does on the issues I am an expert on -- immigration policy and safety net policy

But I will also be taking a broader view of American politics, thinking about how I can help change structures so we don't end up here again
I'll be discussing the role of immigration in the US workforce with a fantastic set of panelists on Jan 30!

I'll talk about why anti-immigration policies make Social Security and Medicare solvency worse .... & why we shouldn't make decisions about humans based only on their fiscal impact
Join us online on January 30 at 12pm ET for this panel of scientists to provide a demographic overview of the U.S. immigrant population. See the panelists and register here: buff.ly/elJ7uTd @fertmortmig.bsky.social @chloeneast.bsky.social

There is video of the shooting of a woman by ICE in Minneapolis circulating that shows an ICE agent repeatedly shooting her at point blank range while she tries to drive off. There was no obvious threat to any ICE agent.

Given news that ICE shot and killed an observer in Minneapolis, here is a pattern we've seen before:
*DHS say officers were under threat. This justifies to use deadly force.
*Subsequent reporting shows such claims simply don't hold up.

Which groups of people had an increase in food insecurity between 2023 and 2024?

Those already disadvantaged -- single mothers, Black people, and those w income below 130% of the poverty line

Only 2 groups experienced a decrease -- Hispanic people and those w income 130-185% of the poverty line.

Food insecurity in 2024 was almost the same rate it was during the Great Recession.... but sure everything is totally fine in our economy

EXCLUSIVE: We found that Instacart is using AI algorithms to charge customers different prices for the same items.

It's not just online. It's in physical grocery stores too.

Our months-long investigation with @consumerreports.org and @groundwork.bsky.social found it could cost families $1200/year.

"Ecuadorians make up just 4% of New York state’s non-citizen population, but *nearly a quarter* of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests in the state, the report found. Venezuelans and Guatemalans account for roughly 1% of the state’s non-citizen population but 7% and 8% of ICE arrests"
New @thenyic.bsky.social report, that I co-authored, on how ICE arrests have changed nationally, and especially in New York State, since Trump took office.

Reminder to think through:

1. which deaths the media pays attention to

2. what groups of people politicians assume are *all* more likely to commit a crime when one group member does

This has a long history rooted in white supremacy in the US

TFW your dad sends you a video he thinks you'll find interesting and it turns out its your own research being used in a congressional hearing!

Thanks @jayapal.house.gov and Robert Lynch for highlighting the facts.
Mass deportations don’t open up more jobs for U.S.-born workers — they cause American workers to lose jobs, wages to go down, and our economy to slow.

Watch Robert Lynch, an economics professor at Washington College, discuss how immigrants are good for the American economy.
