First day of teaching at my new job!

(Same first day outfit as when I started my sabbatical job at Hamilton Project.)

Only in Davis for a pit stop but my Davis people know the one place I have to go to while I’m here.

One of my favorite places ever and definitely my favorite grocery store ever!

More and more evidence that the 1980s were an inflection point for the US that I can't stop thinking about

5. Zooming in on LA area, there was a ramp up in arrests that increasingly impacted those without a criminal conviction *right before* the protests in LA began June 6th (red line)

As protests continue, ICE arrests continue. These arrests affect more and more people without criminal convictions.
July 24, 2025 at 3:57 PM
4. We look area by area at changes in arrests types.

Some arrests have initial spike because of pre-existing CAP programs (e.g. Houston, New Orleans, Miami).

Others have spike in arrests due to the new city-wide raids that ICE have been conducting (e.g. Boston, Denver, Los Angeles).
July 24, 2025 at 3:57 PM
3. Some geographic areas are experiencing more arrests and greater increases in arrests than others

ICE areas of responsibility with largest percent increases in arrests are those around Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans and San Antonio
July 24, 2025 at 3:57 PM
2. ICE increasingly arrests people through methods that do not target those with a criminal conviction

Initial post Trump arrests through CAP-where ICE screens inmates in incarceration facilities

Recent spike through other methods that mostly arrest those without criminal conviction

Some good news today!

I've had several sleepless nights recently wondering what I'd do if I didn't have tenure. It's rough out there right now and I hope to keep making it better for people less fortunate than me.

An extremely important part of this report from @benzipperer.org @epi.org is calculating the state by state job losses that will result from mass deportations

Here in Colorado, Trump's proposed deportations would reduce the labor force by 3% and reduce the construction labor force by a WHOPPING 23%

Revoking TPS for roughly 350,000 people will hurt our economy on top of being inhumane.

Me in @washingtonpost.com talking about this:

It's hard to find data on where TPS holders live but here is snapshot from Fall 2024 that gives a sense of where the recent SCOTUS ruling revoking TPS for Venezuelans will have the biggest impacts.

Limiting SNAP eligibility based on citizenship status, as House Agriculture Comm wants, harms future US generations

My research shows the last time US did this more US-born children born low birth weight and were more likely to have developmental health issues
