These women's inner lives as written tend to be pretty thin, and I think part of the reason is that for the asshole male protagonist to seem complex, and deep, all of the women they mistreat and immiserate need to be relatively simple and shallow.

We're not often expected to think that male abusers in film/game/fiction are actually doing good. We're supposed to see beyond their abuse and get to understand the man and that indoctrinates something WAY more insidious than overt and superficial justification of abuse.

It's my strong impression that the median European voter hates migrants, *especially* from Muslim countries, which is why they keep voting for leaders who enact xenophobic policies. So it's not baffling to me at all that nationalism would appeal to those same leaders.
