Platelets sequester extracellular DNA, capturing tumor-derived and free fetal DNA
Platelets are anucleate blood cells vital for hemostasis and immunity. During cell death and aberrant mitosis, nucleated cells release DNA, resulting in “cell-free” DNA in plasma (cfDNA). An excess of...

Just finished reading the original #Mistborn trilogy and I am amazed with the truly engaging storytelling and character development!

I can really recommend the reading, as I am already looking very much forward to starting the next book from @brandonsanderson.bsky.social!

The five senses of immunity
A genealogy of immunity reveals increasingly complex systems for pathogen response, organism homeostasis, and multispecies interaction. New studies show how the five senses can all contribute to behav...

It was a pleasure to host the @sawitzkilab.bsky.social for the First Symposium on #SwarmLearning for Precision Medicine! Our team from the @dzne.science is always glad to engage with such outstanding researchers for important collaborations!

Really excited with our plans for the future!
We’re excited to be a part of the Swarm Learning Initiative, working to accelerate immune response analyses in infectious diseases!

Anika, Lev, and Birgit joined the 1st Swarm Learning Symposium at @dzne.science, where Anika shared innovative concepts for ex vivo functional analyses. 📈

Very interesting pre-print from the group of Vishva Dixit in California! The @genentech.bsky.social team found the small-molecule inhibitors of caspase activity can be delivered using GSDMD pores as an entry point!

Delivery of caspase inhibitors through GSDMD pores to inhibit pyroptosis
Caspase-1, -4, -5, and -11 activate Gasdermin D (GSDMD) to form pores in the plasma membrane. In addition to releasing interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18, GSDMD pores cause a lytic, proinflammatory form of...

Another fantastic shot from @roisinmcmanus.bsky.social at the mechanisms of activation and modulation of the #NLRP3 inflammasome! Congratulations to the McManus team at the @dzne.science and my dear friends at the iii @unibonn.bsky.social! Fantastic work!

NLRP3-mediated glutaminolysis controls microglial phagocytosis to promote Alzheimer’s disease progression
How NLRP3 impacts Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is unclear. McManus et al. find that NLRP3 is located at mitochondria where it regulates microglial metabolism. Depletion or chronic pharmacological inhibiti...

In this very interesting publication on @cp-immunity.bsky.social, Saller and the team of Olaf Gross unveiled the complexity of #NLRP3 activators, highlighting mitochondria’s roles in switching #apoptosis to NLRP3 #inflammasome activation!

Acute suppression of mitochondrial ATP production prevents apoptosis and provides an essential signal for NLRP3 inflammasome activation
Mitochondria control metabolism, cell death, and innate immunity, yet their reciprocal mechanistic connections are elusive, as is the conserved physiological function of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Saller...

The infamous article that stated the fallacious positive effect of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin for COVID is now retracted, i.e., the results are made up and cannot be reproduced (of course).

Let's hope that good science can prevail - faster - whenever needed the most.
