The shutdown put incredible strain on so many families and dedicated civil servants, but at least it was all for fucking nothing.

Very excited to be at American Society for Microbiology #ASMicrobe meeting. I’m here with a large suitcase of, what could it be? Science swag and also just science. Come talk to us about transforming the future of #metagenomics and #phage research.

Today's the day! Minnesota, let's show up and make our voices heard to support science!
I'm attending the Stand Up for Science rally at the Minnesota State Capitol this Friday, March 7th. Please join me in advocating for science funding and protesting the arbitrary and highly disruptive cuts to our nations' scientific agencies and research universities. standupforscience2025.org

Goosebump producing news this week out of Oregon Health and Science University in the diagnosis of pancreatic CA.
They developed a groundbreaking blood test, called PAC-MANN. This new test can find pancreatic cancer in just 45 minutes, even in its earliest stages.
New blood test identifies hard-to-detect pancreatic cancer with 85% accuracy
A new blood test could help doctors detect pancreatic cancer earlier, potentially improving survival rates for one of the deadliest cancers.

Dr. Wolfe-Simon has long-deserved a "redemption" story, and there was never any sin to redeem anyway. The arsenic bacteria paper will always be one of my favorites, regardless of conclusions. Science shouldn't punish anomalies, that's where all the fun is! #arseniclife
Her Discovery Wasn’t Alien Life, but Science Has Never Been the Same
The internet erupted in controversy over Felisa Wolfe-Simon and colleagues’ claim of a microbe thriving on arsenic. Nearly 15 years later, she’s pursuing new research on the boundaries of life.

Check out our paper on genetically barcoded flies! The barcodes enable multiplexed behavioral assays that are read out by sequencing or can be expressed tissue-specifically to tag cells upstream of single cell transcriptomics. Artwork below by @mdonox.bsky.social - includes a scannable barcode!
A genetic barcoding system lets scientists tag and track cells, making it easier than ever to map gene expression (#transcriptomics) and decode behaviour.

Really disappointed in Target's recent decision to pull back on diversity programs, and I stand w/ Twin Cities Pride in telling them enough is enough. If you want to support Pride, you can donate to their "Fill the Gap" fund which is already halfway to its goal. tcpride.org

One concern I've heard for long-read #metagenomic sequencing is the amount of DNA needed.

New Ampli-Fi protocol from #PacBio now allows as little as 1ng input for library prep - that's kind of a game changer for low biomass samples.
Unlock new possibilities in #genomics with the #PacBio Ampli-Fi protocol! Sequence ultra-limited samples, like insects and preserved specimens, with as little as 1 ng DNA. Explore how this innovation is reshaping #HiFisequencing for diverse species. 🌿🦥

New Ampli-Fi ultra-low-input protocol will support HiFi sequencing from as little as 1 ng of DNA - PacBio
The Ampli-Fi protocol is a new workflow that will enable HiFi sequencing from as little as 1 ng of genomic DNA.

Dissing and defending and arguing about peer review – hot takes and take downs – that's what I'm here for. SciTwitter we are so back! 💕
I think this is a common misunderstanding of the purpose of peer review. In fact, I am confident Jeremy has frequently benefited from peer review, even if he doesn't see it.

Peer review is tremendously useful but not in the way most people think. I will die on this hill. 🧵
I've never, personally, had any direct utility from traditional academic peer review for my scientific work.

I've never used that peer review as any kind of signal or credential in judging a paper or deciding whether to read it.

Nearly all the papers I read are preprints.
