Excited for the ISMB/ECCB conference! I have two posters A520 today about an endogenous and exogenous virus I found in nematodes - and B206 tomorrow about my tool plot_phylo for drawing phylogenies in matplotlib. #ISMBECCB2025

🧬 Are you into endogenous viral elements? If yes (and you should be, they are pretty cool) I highly recommend getting in touch with the amazing Katy via the sign up sheet! 🦠
I'm thinking of organising a meeting on endogenous viral elements (RNA, DNA and retroviral) - if you'd potentially be interested, please fill out the form here - forms.gle/wrCiWMw4yXZe... - so I can gauge interest. Please RT or share with anyone maybe interested! 🧪🧬🖥️🦠 #virology #bioinformatics

NEW: The NIH has begun terminating grants for active projects studying gender identity, DEI, environmental justice, climate change, among other topics.

At least 16 termination letters have already been sent — and hundreds more are coming, people inside NIH tell me.

Exclusive: NIH to terminate hundreds of active research grants
Studies that touch on LGBT+ health, gender identity and DEI in the biomedical workforce could be terminated, according to documents obtained by Nature.

My tool plot_phylo is now available through @pyopensci! Used to plot a phylogenetic tree using matplotlib functionality, so mpl can be used for additional annotation. Very smooth and helpful process with lots of useful feedback. www.pyopensci.org/python-packa... github.com/KatyBrown/pl... 🧪🧬🖥️

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.

I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Hello Bluesky community :)
Would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to some selected bioinformatics work I did together with @thekatybrown.bsky.social, if you are dealing with multiple sequence alignments it might be useful!
