"People — including real-life radicals — are messy. The boundaries of their politics, personal lives, and morality are porous. This is most obvious in the image of Perfidia, a tornado of energetic reappraisal and erotic possibility. A reminder that the representation conversation can be a trap."

I ❤️ @mattbelloni.bsky.social for this. The ethics of Hollywood are basement level. Same for tech (see below a column I wrote in 2019).

I think people have forgotten we're human beings, and that feeling feelings is normal...is something I say as I smoke weed and type into an app.

Level of dissociation I'm currently at?

I'm on my 200th rewatch of Beyonce's Cowboy Carter Paris shows. I'm not sure what outside looks like anymore, but that's OK. Outside is expensive and scary.

Regardless, it's a good time for folks to read up on the Battle of Chavez Ravine.

I really wish all reporting of immigration stories would stop using the term ‘federal agent’ unless it can be confirmed that these cowardly motherfuckers are actually federal agents. Use the term ‘unknown masked men’ or, in the rare cases women are involved ‘unknown masked people’

Thoughtful thread that rings very true to me based on over three decades of covering the media and culture
If we continue to idealize a 'free' press - which is in fact not free, but controlled by the people with the most wealth and thus the most reactionary - then we will endlessly repeat cycles of ebb and flow, with the left riding waves here and there but the tide always coming in from the right.

I'm sorry but the largest protest of my lifetime is not the 7th or 8th biggest news story in the country behind "what does Gen Z want from Instagram?" This shit is humiliating. Rearrange your layout to meet this moment. Omitting the thing happening in every American city is malpractice.

It’s not hyperbole to say that the deaths in Minnesota are on the GOP’s hands. They’ve built this political environment and they’ve allowed a demagogue to spread hate. This is entirely on them.

It is imperative to recognize and call out this regime's bigoted identity politics. Their treatment of nonwhite electeds amounts to Taneyism.

To them, these officials hold no authority they are bound to respect. Padilla, McIver, Baraka are merely the latest. They are doing this to POC on purpose.
