barely got any sleep bc my dog woke me up every hour last night, but i did have a deranged dream that i ran into steve rogers and he was like "hey! how ya been? what have you been writing lately?" and now i feel bad that i haven't written captain america fanfic in years.

i feel like i don't have the same hero worship relationship with tolkien that everyone else does because i used to absolutely obliterate his work as a preteen in little essays because i was mad there were hardly any women characters

It rocks to tell people their shit rocks. Every single person who has ever been nice about my work has been appreciated for doing so. I take time to say I love stuff and it’s always the right time to remind somebody you value their work! You don’t need to get into detail either. Just say it rocks
I’ve sometimes fallen into the trap of thinking that complementing a creative person for their work is less sophisticated or desired than discussion or debate about it but very often the best thing you can say to them is hell yeah and that doesn’t make you dumb it just makes you nice

there was a girl in my intro & advanced creative writing workshops that was like "oh i'm just taking this because i'm new to writing and i really want to learn." she didn't have a lot of confidence and was clearly finding her voice.
she wrote about her identity & her family and they HATED it all.
