that “live as if we were already free” thing, for me, is less about limitless actions than about clearing the obstacles in the way of being fully present in my life. it’s about free kindness that does not restrict itself to humans or even living beings. i’m also kind to places, buildings, objects.

when i received the 16 precepts of soto zen practice, i was given a dharma name & a beautifully hand-calligraphed document tracing the lineage of dharma ancestors all the way down to my teacher & me. this type of naming has meaning to me as a welcoming-in & -to.

recently reacquainted myself with this ten-year-old video & it’s still one of my favorite pieces. simple as toast; all non-pro-level tools & my peculiar brainmeats doing their thing:

finishing up editing & post on a video begun a couple years ago. good to reacquaint myself with the idea behind the piece: offering intentionally different experiences of the project for people of different sensory arrangements. acknowledging that i can’t make every piece of my art available

thinking for some reason, @teaorangesspi.bsky.social, about that columbia student (wasn’t it columbia?) who always had “a light lunch.” what was his name—do you remember?

nothin’ like going back to work on a video only to learn i’d already finished & uploaded it 3+ years ago, but hadn’t added it to my website—& forgot about the whole thing. granted i had a (wonderfully) life-changing experience a week before the time of upload, but yo, memory loss in aging is real🤯

i don’t usually post in this vein, but the MIXES OF A LOST WORLD cure album really scratches an itch. the sweet spot between two flavors i love.

lately i’ve been trying to get my head around my idiosyncratic approach to fandom. i don’t really know anyone else who does “fan” in the same way, which makes it hard to contextualize what moves me in the main community in which i participate. it’s even hard to claim that i do participate, because

it can be very hard to recognize & honor my limitations & to hold the boundaries they determine. it’s especially difficult in the context of mutual aid. i don’t only mean money, though this does apply there—i mean more like time & effort, space, needs for privacy for medical or other bodily matters…

perhaps it is pertinent to remind the world that fb was initially created as a closed network for a small batch of undergrads to use to comment, consequence-free, on the bodies of any/all women on campus.

did a lot of small things i enjoyed today but the most satisfying was to go out onto the garage roof, free the compost tumbler & base from the melting ice, & put them back on their support. then i cleared drainage paths for the melting snow. i can’t garden yet, but i can almost-garden!🪏🌱🔜

recently i had an experience that gave closure to a couple of open questions in my life, & in a totally unexpected—though unsurprising for my life’s patterns—context & way.

i had long wondered what would happen if i met someone now, from my before™️, who had dropped away from my immediate life. 1/?

funny thing about the erasure proj i mentioned yesterday—i got greedy for more raw materials & downloaded a batch of files. i then went deep down the rabbit hole & started reading to learn rather than for the erasure only. it’s fascinating, & for me, bizarrely validating & affirming. wild.

dreamed i was buying a hat from a street vendor in london, & when i used my phone to pay it somehow initiated a video call back home, which sonny answered. i then spent several minutes trying to calm him down as he excitedly mewed & marped & rrrRRRR!ppp’d at me about how urgently i must return🤦‍♂️

i am beginning to wonder if part of what feeds my prolific output is a form of displacement activity. i realized that turning to an older—or initiating a new—project is one way i handle my anxiety/difficulty with waiting for information that affects some aspect of my current projects.
