sonny, looking absolutely wild and silly, sits in the empty dry washing-machine drum. his head is tilted way back so as to look directly upward, and he appears to be just about to lunge into a leap out of the machine.

snow did not really reach the maple-covered floodplain.
low-angle shot of ground covered with pale gold, green and peach-colored fallen maple leaves. wet black trunks of the trees from which the leaves fell reach up into the pale sky. a patch of swordlike iris plant (blossom long gone, of course) in front of a big textured steel slab set askew and upright in the earth of a leaf-strewn floodplain. the steel slab has been tagged in turquoise blue. dark tree trunks recede into the distance. a lean-to shelter made of fairly thick tree limbs around a maple tree on the floodplain. diffuse light comes down theough yellow leaves, giving a light golden cast to the image. a dusting of snow on the tree limbs makes them seem to be glistening.

a year ago today this dorkpants came into our life & totally reshaped it.
sonny as a 6-month-old, not yet grown into his ears. he sits on the corner of a patterned rug over dark old wooden floorboards of varying widths and directions. he is not used to his surroundings and is looking with great interest and alertness over his right shoulder at something off-camera.

quiet studio day today.
a low-angle shot from the chair in which i sit, showing unmatched rugs on the floor, cluttered shelves and stackable bins full of materials and tools, a massive wooden desk covered with photos in front of a wall of photos (my “wall of love”) of people i love, both living and gone. a vacuum cleaner, various low tables, a small suitcase lying open, and a gray hoody are strewn about the floor. the place has a vibe of comfort and activity paused midstream. warm sunlight comes in from large south-facing windows (not in shot).

here is the most terrifying okra plant i have ever grown—legit as big around as my wrist & downright reptilian!
sunlight illuminates the stalk and root knuckles of an okra plant pulled out of the soil. the texture of the stalk is very defined by the side-lighting. it looks like an alligator foot. more of the same okra stalk from a different angle and with another stalk beneath it. this view looks less scaly, but no less intimidating. a little blush of red lines one edge of the stalk.

this one was my advisor for today. look at those chrysoprase eyes! (also that glare yikes sizzle)

i think this is a shaggy mane inky cap, but my guidebook is for the northeast, not the midwest.

trying & failing to show you this lovely chaotic three-dimensional spider web
underside of wooden bench-table painted in primary colors. illuminated from behind by sun coming through a window, the web partially defines itself where the light can pick out dusty strands against the shadows. the camera can’t pick up the boxiness of the web, but i know it’s there.

i hold up my phone to take a photo of the polarized faceplate of a space-helmet as featured in the installation by eric j. garcia (if i recall correctly) as part of the “uncertain histories” show at the chicago cultural center. i am reflected in the faceplate, a blurry white man in a tweed cap and jacket, standing in a vast, quiet space with tall wide windows. the tinted faceplate casts the reflected room in golden light.

this is it, my comic book glamour shot. featuring the round shades i’ve had for, oh, 40 years.
i’m using fancy “portrait” settings showing me in high-key monochrome and contrasting my black fleece zip vest & visible blue jay tattoo with my pale skin. my freshly-buzzed scalp is also contrasted with my topknot, braided out of the way down the back of my skull. the image is so crisp you can pick out individual eyebrow and facial hairs.

not easily discernable, sonny is a lump beneath the freshly-replaced slate blue sheet. blurred by the low-light long exposure, sonny looks off to the right while i photograph him with my head under the sheet. i hold the sheet up so he can emerge, all calm interest, his paws over the edge of the mattress and his questing nose off to the left.

can’t quite get a good enough shot of the actual green man on this green man stonewear mug by zach ozma—the glaze reflects too much. but i love it.
my left hand supports a heavy speckled-brown stoneware mug on a dark wood surface next to a crumpled black bandanna. the shine from the glaze over a hand-drawn and colored green man illustration makes the features somewhat hard to see, but some comes through, along with the rich emerald green of the glaze used for the face.
