Straw necked #ibis fly thousands of kilometres between wetlands. They like to visit Canberra mostly for our well kept lawns (thanks Parliament House!) and tasty bin contents (in #Australia they are known 'bin chickens'). #BWFri

European Greenfinch were introduced to #Australia in the 1860s by European settlers.

They move their jaw side to side to crush seed hulls, making them incredibly efficient at opening tough shells.

Purple Swamphen #walking for #BirdOfTheDay. Their oversized toes work like snowshoes, letting them walk on floating lily pads without sinking. They're also powerful enough for swimming (even without webbing) and running.

Blue banded bees are native to #Australia and are solitary nesters. They meticulously groom themselves while clinging to branches or twigs, using their legs to clean themselves. This little man was rescued from a bird bath.

Measuring 8-9 cm long the #Weebill Is Australia's smallest bird. It's scientific name, Smicrornis brevirostris, literally translates to "small bird with a #short nose".

Eastern Water Dragons open their mouths wide and puff out their throats to intimidate rivals and threats. I was using a telescopic lens from quite far away, perhaps not far enough away for this little guy's comfort.

Black-shouldered Kites, endemic to #Australia, are a small #raptor that hunts by hovering 10-12 meters above the ground. Between hunting flights, they perch in exposed trees, scanning the surrounding grassland with their distinctive red eyes

Our smallest friends also need a drink in this heat. My bird baths are always refreshed and full, as are the ground level drinking bowls that help the little guys. Please remember to place twigs, leaves and other escape routes for any that might accidentally fall.
