Legitimate reporting and illegitimate reporting both engender conversation and debate.

But while legitimate reporting inspires conversation about a story's substance, illegitimate reporting inspires questions like "Why did the newspaper print this garbage?"

America is beautiful, contradictory, unfinished. I am proud of our country even as we constantly strive to make it better, to protect and deepen our democracy, to fulfill its promise for each and every person who calls it home.

Happy Independence Day. No Kings in America.

I just moderated my first town meeting; a road discontinuance, decided by the citizens of Colchester, CT. Fun to try this out supported by our town clerk and first selectman. Transferable skills from academic governance! One day I might be ready to moderate the town budget meeting. . .

If you think this can’t happen, remember that of the 125,000 Japanese Americans who were interned during WWII for years without charge or trial, two-thirds were U.S. citizens. Including me.

The @heardislandgov.bsky.social account is making me smile this morning. But it does leave me wondering, what kind of penguin was Pingu?
We will never allow Orange tinged Emperors to rule our land. In fact, we only have King Penguins here on our islands. Since you are abolishing your #USEducationDept please refer below to learn a little about our actual regal citizens

I remember the fair trade dream when countries were given the chance of trading their way out of poverty.
Botswana for instance through diamonds - now subject to a 37% tariff.
The Ivory Coast through cocoa - now contending with a tariff of 21%.
How will they cope?

But the Scottish model hasn’t fared much better. It seems that the reality that HE *is* expensive and the related fact that it brings back excellent returns isn’t being recognized by gov’t.
And if a subject can't recruit these, it is, as @gsoh31.bsky.social says, in a death-spiral

Which loses capacity for us all, and makes eventual recover much longer and costly

Fundamentally, our model for higher education is broken

And federal agents in plain clothes who refuse to identify themselves will be the ones to do it.
