So I did the Bluesky "roast" thing and it said, Sarah, maybe lay off the jellyfish posts.

But there should only ever be MORE jellyfish content. Everyone knows this.

Lots of revelations for Ish today! From ecstatic experiences with whale sperm to discovering that everyone's chained to the ever turning wheel of samsara ("Oh! my friends, but this is man-killing. Yet this is life!"). 🐋

Humans exhibiting nesting behavior in the runup to snow events is one of my favorite things. It’s almost an instinctive herd phenomenon

as much as I complain about some scientific names, some of them are very nice. the species name of this jellyfish is "punctata" meaning spotted. that is a good name that soothes me.

Fun bluesky fact is that no matter what else is going on, someone is always reading Moby Dick

"Like household dogs they came snuffling round us, right up to our gunwales, and touching them; till it almost seemed that some spell had suddenly domesticated them. Queequeg patted their foreheads; Starbuck scratched their backs with his lance" 🥹🐋

I spoke too soon! 🐳
"But though the green palmy cliffs of the land soon loomed on the starboard bow, and with delighted nostrils the fresh cinnamon was snuffed in the air, yet not a single jet was descried."
"...bespattering them and their glorying crews all over with showers of gore..." got me thinking: I don't believe Ishmael has talked about what any of this *smells* like. Surely there are many scents involved in whaling ripe for lengthy descriptions and digressions. 🐋

Yikes! I didn't realize my ebook habit was costing @dcpubliclibrary.bsky.social so much money. It's a great benefit for DC residents.

Interesting legislative idea to band with states to pressure publishers. Thanks to @maustermuhle.bsky.social, @51st.news for the reporting.

Libraries can't afford e-books. D.C. lawmakers have a plan.
The demand and price for e-books is up — and it’s busting the D.C. Public Library budget.

As part of my art therapy (self imposed), I'd been making cute jellyfish characters. But a friend asked for 3 jellyfish to hang in her hallway. I decided they needed to be at least semi-realistic. So, here are the first two, completed.

Still working on the thirsand I'll share when I'm done.

Since Scott expedition posting seems to be a thing today, I'm going to take the opportunity to encourage folks to pick up a copy of The Worst Journey in the World and learn about the joys of collecting penguin eggs in the middle of an Antarctic winter.

This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,

The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance

Iconic imo

Y'all. I got sidetracked by Chapter 55.

“But though this sculpture is half man and half whale, so as only to give the tail of the latter…”

Sir, that's a mermaid(man).

“Though universally denominated a dolphin, I nevertheless call this a whale.”

Not everything is a 🐋, Ish!

I have a theory that those of us who were raised on IRC or AIM are absolutely insufferable in Slack to those who were not, because instead of writing a three-paragraph thing, we'll break that up into 15 comments.
