I must admit that - up until now - I hadn't given much thought to the homes of Sir Gruffudd Llwyd, principal lieutenant/de facto ruler of much of North Wales in the first decades of the 14th century.

For modern takes on post-Conquest Gwynedd, men like Sir Gruffudd are a bit of a problem [cont.]
Caer Penrhos nr. Llanrhystud,Ceredigion is the only recorded Welsh ringwork castle. It was built by Owain Gwynedd's son Cadwaladr in 1149 & was much fought over up to 1327 when it was possibly the country seat of Sir Gruffudd Llwyd. It lies within a hillfort & has many intriguing earthworks outside.
