When you’re cataloguing a recently acquired collection, and you uncover a box full of Amstrad Locoscript disks. Apparently LocoScript was a word processing software produced by Amstrad back in 1985.

We’ll never complain about exporting data from a 3 ½ inch floppy again!

To mark this significant anniversary, the Archives and Special Collections at Bangor University has curated an exhibition that highlights the important moments in the history of the Cathedral with items from our archival collection and by including rare printed items from the Cathedral Library - a collection that has been in the care of Bangor University for several decades.

Nododd y siarter: “Caiff myfyrwyr benywaidd eu derbyn i fynychu unrhyw un o’r cyrsiau addysgu a sefydlwyd gan y Coleg, yn amodol ar y cyfyngiadau a’r rheoliadau (os o gwbl) a ragnodir yn Statudau’r Coleg o bryd i’w gilydd.” Cafodd colegau Cymru eu 'goleuo' yn eu hagweddau at addysg merched yn ystod y cyfnod hwn - mewn cyferbyniad, ni roddodd Rhydychen raddau i ferched tan 1920, tra bu i Gaergrawnt aros tan 1948, gan eu gwneud y Brifysgol Brydeinig olaf i wneud hynny. Erbyn 1888, roedd tua 40% o'r myfyrwyr yn ferched ym Mangor, cyfran uwch nag mewn sefydliadau yn Lloegr yn ystod y cyfnod hwn.

Staff & Students outside the Penrhyn Arms, 1900-1901 CP/74 Photograph of the General Body of Women Students Dyddiad/Date: 1923-1924 UCNW/PHO/2/25 From the early days, the University College of North Wales (Bangor University) had a very inclusive policy towards admitting women. The charter stated: “Female students shall be admitted to attend any of the courses of instruction established by the College, subject to such restrictions and regulations (if any) as Statutes of the College from time to time prescribe.” Welsh colleges were ‘enlightened’ in their attitudes to women’s education during this time - in contrast, Oxford did not grant degrees to women until 1920 whilst Cambridge waited until 1948, making them the last British University to do so. By 1888, women at Bangor made up approximately 40% of the student body, a higher proportion than at English institutions during this period.

In December 2024, Bangor University Archives and Special Collections and the Institute for the Study of Welsh Estates were awarded a grant of £14,850 to transform online access to the Jamaica Papers held within the Penrhyn estate archive. Thanks to the substantial grant through the Welsh Government’s Anti-Racist Wales Culture, Heritage and Sport Fund, a large percentage of the Penrhyn (Jamaica) material, around 80% is to be digitised (nearly 500 documents). The Penrhyn collection is recognised as one of the largest and most significant estate archives in Europe and it includes one of the most important and chronologically expansive collections of records relating to the operation of transatlantic slavery. The Penrhyn Jamaica records preserve a detailed record of the Pennant family's centuries-long involvement in Jamaica and in the enslavement of African people. Digitising a representative selection of these papers and making them freely available online will empower individuals and communities across Wales and internationally to engage with them through their own lens.

Today’s Explore Your Archives theme is #EYASilence Libraries are well known places of silence, more so in years gone by when Librarians would enforce the rule with an iron hand. Here we have a couple of letters of correspondence between Bangor University’s Registrar and the Librarian at the time, Thomas Richards, regarding students releasing a dog in the library and another student setting off fireworks in the library. Both believed to be RAG week pranks. The students received harsh punishment, being banished from the library for the rest of term and the firework culprit also receiving a hefty fine.
