BEAUMARIS CONSERVATION AREA

“Papers relating to the conservation area of Beaumaris (Civic Amenities Act 1967)”

Date: 1968-1972 BA/6/280
A conservation area is an area of special architectural or historic interest in which the character or appearance is desirable to preserve or enhance. The concept was introduced by the Civic Amenities Act of 1967 when it was decided that listing historic buildings individually was not enough to protect groups of buildings. It was recognised that the special character of a place may derive from many factors, including: the grouping of buildings; their scale and relationship with outdoor spaces; architectural detailing; and so on.

TEACH MÓR, PLASTY, MANSION: A CONSIDERATION OF TWO IRISH-WELSH ESTATES During the 18th and 19th centuries, some landed estates had extensive holdings in both Ireland and Wales. Did the owners of these estates treat their Welsh and Irish tenants in the same way? Were such estates considered to be particularly Irish or particularly Welsh? Using hitherto under-explored source material, this research seminar will probe these issues, and place them in their social, economic and political context.

Here we have 2 Sale Catalogues from the Great Anglesey Sale of 1904, where some 17,000 lots were sold including his ‘Important Jewellery’. Also, a sale catalogue of ‘Valuable Casket of Jewels’, the property of a ‘nobleman’ held prior to the 5th Marquess of Anglesey’s bankruptcy declaration.
