There's a long sordid history of contrarians in the economics space applying their narrow toolset to problems they don't understand to argue for claims that resonate w/ their right-leaning political ideology. They then pass of this stinking 💩 as wisdom, with much help from a lazy media.🧵
I recently got into a geoengineering tiff that I, and I hope @michaelemann.bsky.social, found amusing.. and I've been fooling about with some climate economics here and there.
So I was greatly amused when I tuned into this episode of @unlearnecon.bsky.social:

The problem with most machine-based random number generators is that they’re not TRULY random, so if you need genuine randomness it is sometimes necessary to link your code to an external random process like a physical noise source or the current rate of US tariffs on a given country.

All supernovas ever observed, tens of thousands of dying stars

Once the Rubin Observatory is completed it will be able to see several millions of supernovas, dwarfing what we've seen so far

This is from a brilliant website by Isaac Shivvers.

I look at three things Trump's done these past 2 months that appear to have been learned from the Orban antecedent (or directly from Mr. Orban)

First is ignoring high-court rulings, attempting to stack courts and fire non-partisan judges, and reinterpreting the constitution

Some people LOVE to tell me that scientists have lost public trust because we were wrong about something, we communicated badly, we swore or cried or acted fallibly human, or whatever.

That’s bullshit. Scientists lost public trust because disinformation campaigns like this stole it & eradicated it.
This is not the first time a public health agency’s communications have been spoofed and altered w/antivaxx rhetoric. We documented this in our analysis to the US response to measles outbreaks in 2017-2019. It was very challenging for health departments to overcome.

These same Justices held Biden could not use a statute passed by Congress for student debt relief because the statute authorized it but needed to extra double authorize it.

But for Trump, he can simply ignore statutes and appropriations entirely, Congress is irrelevant.
Justice Alito dissents, along with Thomas, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. Here is the final paragraph from the dissent.

Astonishing that four SCOTUS justices think the president can order the federal government to refuse to pay congressionally-appropriated funds to contractors for *work already completed.*

And in fact they’re “stunned” that anyone would disagree.
