Law Dork can confirm that this is the message Robert Newlen—who became the Acting Librarian of Congress after Trump purported to fire Carla Hayden—sent to colleagues a little before noon today. One source within LOC adds that staff were told that LOC is waiting on Congress as to next steps.

"The president fired the librarian of congress because she put inappropriate books in the library for children."

The library of congress keeps a copy of every book published. The librarian role is administrative - they don't "put" anything there.

In no way should a U.S. Citizen be detained, anywhere, because of their protected speech (and neither should a non-citizen, to be clear). To do so is to violate an oath to the Constitution and the rule of law.

They don't call it the library of Congress without good reason. Not the library of the president.

So many people use this material! You’d only shut it down if you really thought history shouldn’t be public!
Some sad confirmation from @bcgl.bsky.social while I was at UW last week—the National Digital Newspaper Program—which builds Chronicling America—has been shut down

Historical newspapers are probably the archival material most used by the general public—for genealogy, local history—it’s such a loss

This is definitely something you do when a technology is very good and doesn’t need intense regulation.
This is insane. Republicans have inserted language into the budget reconciliation bill that would ban states from regulating AI in any capacity for 10 years.

'Sinners' might look like a film about spiritual warfare on the surface, but it’s doing something deeper. It pulls back the veil on how we’ve always lived at the intersection of faith and folk practices, even without the words to name it.
