The planetary nebula Sh2-188 in the constellation Cassiopeia is also known as Shrimp Nebula due to its shape. I took this image over five nights in August using a C8, an ASI294mc Pro camera and a total exposure time of around 13 hours (details in image) #Astrophotography

This is my re-do of the Tulip Nebula, SH 2-101. It’s an attractive nebula, but what makes it even more interesting is that the black hole Cygnus X-1 is nearby. It is in a binary system where Cygnus X-1 and an observable star orbit each other. So cool!

The indicated star is Cygnus X-1. The binary pair consists of a supergiant star (about 20 solar masses), and an estimated 15 solar mass black hole. The pair is located about 7000 LY from us. Cygnus X-1 is one of the strongest X-Ray sources from space that we can detect. It produces X-Ray bursts that last milliseconds. The pair orbit each other every 5.8 days. You cannot see the black hole, of course, but it presence is detected because of the effect it has on the companion star and the effect of the high-energy X-Rays on the surrounding area. The Tulip Nebula (SH2-101) is not the easiest target to image. At mag 9, it is a requires lots of data collection and cooperative skies. In fact its total brightness is less than that of the star we were talking about. It is an emission nebula, about 6000 LY from Earth. It was first catalogued in 1959. SH 2-101 is a challenging target to image. It’s located in the Milky Way and there are tons of stars in front of it. To enhance it, I removed the stars, developed the nebula alone hi, and then added it to the image containing the stars. Clear skies, Doug

The spiral galaxy NGC 6946 is known as the Fireworks Galaxy due to its high rate of supernovae. I captured it through my C8 over 6 nights in June & July – actually just as a test of the astro camera that @astrophil.de lent me (technical details in image)

The Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635) in Cassiopeia was my first target with the new ASI294mc Pro camera. In total, I accumulated a good 8.5 hours of exposure time over 8 nights from our terrasse and am really happy with the result (techn. details in picture) #astrophotography

🔭 A Tale of Two Nebulae

This colorful telescopic view towards the musical northern constellation Lyra reveals the faint outer halos and brighter central ring-shaped region of M57, popularly known as the Ring Nebula. To modern astronomers M57 is a well-known planetary nebula. With a central ring about one light-year across, M57 is definitely not a planet though, but the gaseous shroud of one of the Milky Way's dying sun-like stars. Roughly the same apparent size as M57, the fainter and more often overlooked barred spiral galaxy at the left is IC 1296. In fact, over 100 years ago IC 1296 would have been known as a spiral nebula. By chance the pair are in the same field of view, and while they appear to have similar sizes they are actually very far apart. At a distance of a mere 2,000 light-years M57 is well within our own Milky Way galaxy. Extragalactic IC 1296 (aka PGC62532) is more like 200,000,000 light-years distant. That's about 100,000 times farther away than M57 but since they appear roughly similar in size, former spiral nebula IC 1296 must also be about 100,000 times larger than planetary nebula M57. Look closely at the sharp 21st century astroimage to spot even more distant background galaxies scattered through the frame.
