In recent comments, I mentioned a hypothetical "funny story from my trip to Berlin" that I never got to tell because my conversation partner kept trying to ask about Eo.
[See previous post for link]

But what actually happened in Berlin was not at all funny, or fun.

Esperantistoj: ĉu vi konas la jenan fenomenon? Vi volas diri ion pri via vivo kio nur tuŝetas Esperanton, kaj vi ne sukcesas rakonti ĝin ĉar la alia persono subite scivolas pri Esperanto? Ĉu vi sentas la saman ĝeniĝon kiel mi sentas?
The fact that you looked it up PUTS you in the Smarty Pants Club.

As an Esperanto speaker, I'll say this. It gets old when you try to tell someone about your life tangential to Esperanto - and people end up freaking out about Esperanto and how wild it is that **they** had never heard of it ...

@natsandcats.bsky.social - Funny you should "like" one of my posts. I was just thinking of you - telling a story about you, actually.
I saw your name and thought: wait, is this THE David Gaines?

"Neniu" scios.
"Nobody" will know.
Screw it! I say do the whole thing in Esperanto! That way, nobody will know what’s going on!

It was 1999. We were visiting Berlin for the world Esperanto convention. My wife was in a German hospital with complications related to pregnancy. I took a side trip to a music store to look for this album by Freundedkreis while we were in Germany.

So many people on BlueSky are pointing out that Bovino means cow in Esperanto. Why is nobody also saying that "Greg'" means "herd" in Esperanto?

For whatever it's worth, I actually have seen the Book of Numbers in Esperanto
Book of Numbers but in Esperanto. I've not seen *that*

I've been waiting a long time for an opportunity to mention Canary Island Whistled Speech.

Someone claimed:
> I taught my cats Esperanto to make sure no one could ever understand them, including me.

I call BS.
I'm calling Bovofekaĵo on all this.

1 - I could understand them.
2 - In Esperanto, cats say "miaŭ" which is pronounced the same as in English.

Are you sure they're not speaking Canary Island Whistled Speech?

To the author or anybody reading along. What language is this? Google translate does not do well with it, but from context I suppose it says: I want to study other auxiliary languages like Kah or Kotava, but who is learning them here?

Good question
mi wan stude ale helpe bash kom Kah o Kotava, ama kam studer zai a hir…
January 10, 2026 at 3:57 PM
This is another interesting post to see again. Somebody recently replied to an older Reddit comment from me. Apparently I ruffled some feathers by claiming that Kotava had maybe one or two speakers of unknown fluency.

It seems just a month before I was willing to grant five or 20 speakers.
The fact that in 50 years Kotava is basically unheard (How many speakers? 2? 5? 20?) shows that there is more to turning a "project" into a "language" than "fairness".

I have no criticism of Kotava, but I found out that some people feel very strongly about its perceived flaws.
January 10, 2026 at 3:34 PM
I ended up searching blue sky today for Kotava. I had forgotten that I already brought it up once. Most of the recent hits were from my own discussion.

But now I wonder what the many lessons were that I speak of; the things that Esperanto critics could learn from Kotava
I only just started looking at Kotava within the last week or two. Mostly, I was trying to verify my assertion that today's auxlang creators are like finavenkistoj only more so.

It seems that there are many lessons that Esperanto's critics could take from Kotava if they actually cared to.

It feels funny to say this about this topic, but call me old-fashioned. I still prefer using a full size computer to surf the Internet.

One downside of trying to do things on your phone is that there's no keyboard. I find myself using dictation, but then I'm limited to posting in English.

Thanks to high winds my home internet has been out for the last 14 hours or more. Looks like I can log into blue sky from a web browser on my phone.

I'm sure someday I will regret knowing this.

You're kidding, right?

The guy who invented Esperanto thought Esperanto was "dumb, baby shit"? Not likely.

Of the languages he was most familiar with, Spanish was not one of them. He was, however, familar with French:

- I hope
- j'espère

It doesn't have to be everyone. Just the person you want to talk to.
if only everyone spoke Esperanto!

Wow, yes. I remember this one. I think it was a big deal because it was in 3D - COLOR 3D even. Am I thinking of the right film.
It would be fun to find this and watch it - just for the nostalgia and to see what I actually do remember.
