Okay new rule: if you respond to my jokes with advice and I don’t know you, I’m blocking you.

Good morning, by the way.

“Don’t tell me you could imagine. I won’t give you a medal” is legitimately something I would hang on my wall if somebody cross-stitched it.
they are not brilliant.

the billionaires and institutions in this country are just more craven than we could have ever imagined, even in our most cynical imaginings.

(don't tell me you could imagine. I won't give you a medal.)

Without getting into it too much, the Thing You Do that feels simple & straightforward can seem like deepest sorcery to someone who doesn’t have that facility & vice versa, & that’s good & beautiful imo, whether it leads to striving through difficulty or dwelling more intentionally in your strength

Perhaps the greatest proof to me that age rots the brain is that somewhere in the past 28 years my brain has reclassified Sugar Ray as “pleasantly nostalgic.”

Every time I go into a McDonald’s, especially for breakfast, there is at least one table with two or more old guys just hanging out, talking or playing chess or something. And tbh I think it’s kind of beautiful.

Well shit. Now I’m gripped by this fact as well.
My brain finds the muffin part distinct, having a top muffin half and a bottom muffin half.

But now I'm gripped by the fact that an Egg McMuffin puts the meat on top but the Sausage McMuffin with Egg puts it in the middle.

In a Sausage McMuffin with Egg, the sausage patty sits between the cheese and the egg. And my weird brain has decided that there must be a right side up to this sandwich, but cannot decide which side is up. So what do you think: is the egg on bottom and cheese on top, or the other way around?

I know in my bones that there will come a day when Costco stops selling cheap hot dogs, and on that day a part of my soul will die. But for now we still have cheap Costco hot dogs, which is to say that there is still beauty in the world.

This one makes me think of this concept from Buddhism—and, I admit, I’m at best an amateur Buddhist—of non-striving. That is, neither pulling toward the good nor pushing away from pain, rather accepting that both are temporary and both are part of life.
Today's Love Letter is a reflection on the incredible, healing, life-affirming power of pain -- and how good it is to get the chance to hurt.

I feel like there are two kinds of dads who are hard to shop for. One is the dad who always buys himself the things he wants, so by the time it's a gift-giving occasion he's already got the things you can think to get him. The other is the dad who doesn't really have any identifiable interests.
