I can't recommend enough having a WhatsApp group with the neighbours on your street.

I've been able to borrow a spade, steamer, cake tin and sledgehammer, been given plums, cake and milkshake, witnessed a signature and been told when the Aurora Borealis was overhead.

South Africa’s constitution has many checks and balances and rights-protection constitutionally defined institutions. Even so we had a rogue president who deeply undermined the constitutional order.
one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much
