haven't done any further research on this yet so take it with a grain of salt (reddit, y'know!) but this is SO COOL! and i wish i'd known it before i started writing the dragon and the sun so i could've included it

But the interesting thing is that because Korea is a relatively developed country and was very war ridden, there is not a lot of written record of a lot of speech habits. So although 형님 (hyungnim) was used even by females, the interesting thing is that males used 언니 (unnie) to disassociate from any sino-influence, as 언니 (unnie) is a native Korean word. If you're interested in historical k-dramas, you might want to guve 추노 (chuno) a watch, as the male characters there use 언니 (unnie) to refer to one another. Here is an article from when this was a hot issue!
