the fun thing about fish sauce is it's so inexpensive you could literally have to use the whole bottle for each recipe and it would still be pretty affordable

i think the answer is that it really is a skill to be able to consistently make use of all of the ingredients that cycle through your fridge, and if you're not in the habit of cooking regularly, you probably aren't very good at it. which does end up being more expensive and demoralizing!

people will get mad at, say, food youtubers for dividing ingredient costs by the amount used for a given recipe because they still have to pay the full amount. which, sure, but are you throwing out what's left over? i sure hope not!
