Imagine DOGE opens your mail and finds your household electric bill. To eliminate this cost, they burn your house down without warning. Then they total up the bills that, as a homeless person, you will never again pay. On its website, DOGE boasts about the money it has saved you.

First, they said postponed; now the meeting is canceled. That means no flu shots next year.

“'It’s a six-month production cycle,' Dr. Offit said. 'So one can only assume that we’re not picking flu strains this year.'"

Fundamentally, that's a form of mass murder.

Will Bunch provides the analysis that is missing from the NYTimes lengthy article detailing Musk’s actions. “ You can’t stop a coup until you call it for what it is.” Essential reading in The Philadelphia Inquirer by Will Bunch.
OK, "Reclaim the Treasury Payment System" isn't a great rallying cry for getting the masses out in the streets. But if you're in the media and not writing about Musk's ongoing coup and not screaming, "Fire!," then you are doing it wrong

If you know someone who has had cancer, which you almost certainly do, just fyi the National Cancer Institute is the single biggest budget of the 27 pieces of NIH. Anyway it’d be a shame for everyone who knows someone with cancer to hear about NIH funding shenanigans.
I spend much more time on climate than biomedical research these days. But the NIH shit has always just got to me (disclosure, I guess, my dad is a retired neuroscientist with NIH grants). The ROI for NIH-funded research is *absurd*, even before you get to lives saved. I hate it coming under attack.
The NIH gets >50,000 applications for its primary grant type every year and it’s already so cash strapped that the success rate has only recently crept back over 20 percent. You could triple the NIH budget with money the Pentagon loses in the couch cushions and find plenty of worthy science to fund.

In addition to strategies like this, Dems should put together an opposition “shadow cabinet” like they do in the U.K. Only question that remains is…who is now the de facto leader of the party? Is Bloomberg signaling he intends to throw his hat back in the ring?

I hear there are stories coming, but putting the brakes on our country’s world-leading medical research system feels like a five alarm fire and I don’t see a newspaper that even has it on the front page yet
Shutting down medical research — not just within NIH, but everywhere that’s funded by NIH — will have long-term effects on medicine & short-term effects on state, higher education & hospital budgets. This affects all of us, not just researchers.
The assault on NIH is a test for how the national media covers the Trump admin: Trump is shutting down medical research!

That is easy to communicate. Will they treat it as a 5 alarm fire in a way that forces the government to respond, or will they downplay & caveat it?
