Please see our thread about @suttontrust.bsky.social internships research. Important gender differences (in addition to class) that we make sense of through our own data

Interesting and important research by @suttontrust
on access to internships and the graduate labour market, demonstrating that these remain a site of inequalities (and exploitation) for students and young workers
Many graduates use internships to get started in the world of work.

But how do they find them? 🔎

Our new research shows that personal contacts still play a major role, with a fifth of grads finding positions through family and friends.

Remember, The House of Commons education committee does not have any higher education issues planned….

This is sadly not surprising at all. We’ve been going backwards on this for what feels like a long time.
🚨 NEW: The gap in access to internships between working-class and middle-class graduates has almost doubled since 2018.

Our new research reveals a growing gap in access to increasingly important internship routes, with many opportunities under and unpaid 🧵⬇️

How do the Labour Party think this is going to end? We’ve been subjected to managed decline for nearly 20 years & people have shown their opposition to neoliberal governance time & time again. Farage & worse are waiting in the wings, organised & ready to take over - this is perfect for them (again).
Austerity kills people, destroys lives and life chances, health and communities - the prospect of a so-called Labour Government making further cuts to an already decimated public sector is utterly sickening.

Academics from poorer socio-economic backgrounds are more likely to
- not publish
- have outstanding publication records
- introduce more novel scientific concepts
- less likely to receive recognition, as measured by citations, Nobel Prize nominations, and awards.

With Leeds Trinity and Loughborough we're now actually at 83, or exactly half of the 166 universities @timeshighered.bsky.social counts.

HALF OF OUR UNIVERSITIES ARE SHEDDING STAFF. In a normal timeline, politicians would care about this and try to do *something*, *anything*, right?

The world’s five richest men — Bernard Arnault, Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet, Larry Ellison and Elon Musk — have seen their wealth double since 2020, earning $14m an hour.

Meanwhile world poverty has increased for the first time in nearly three decades

Another discussion based in supposed common sense and “seriousness” that exemplifies why capitalism will inevitably kill us. Happy Monday.
Hard not to be bullish on UK growth *if* you think govt will
match rhetoric to action. Heathrow is the totemic issue for me. They’re not serious about growth if they let it drag on. If they are serious they get behind the 3rd runway. And if they’re deadly serious you demand a 4th too.

Labour have already lost the next general election, and this is the reason why. @labourlewis.bsky.social is absolutely spot on here, & I can’t understand the ignorance & arrogance of the Lab leadership who think this is the right approach.
This post from the PM is problematic for a number of reasons.

Abandoned the train after about an hour, came off my bike after going over some ice (I think). On the couch with an ice pack on my knee. So, all in all, not a great day!
I'll be continuing my incessant moans about the state of trains and public transport in the North of England on BlueSky as I did on twitter. Currently 40 minutes stationary with no sign of moving anywhere. Another day, another shambles. @northernassist.bsky.social

Years ago I worked as a digital designer for some children's homes & was in regular meetings where senior management discussed strategies for attracting higher risk / more complex kids. Not because they wanted to help them, but because those kids earned them more money. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
