as a local journalist, seeing my colleagues get their pitches rejected when they boil down to "amplify this issue within the city" (by providing a local angle) hurts me deeply. major +1 to the entire thread before me
This is so true. There's a difference between pure recycling of a piece (bad), and building upon and amplifying an issue in the public square.
I've experienced this a lot this year: "this issue has been covered," "this isn't new," etc. Sometimes I get it, but often, I actually think there's a lot we don't know about so many stories or issues, even some that have technically gotten coverage, or a lot more nuance that needs to be explored.

At my college newspaper, when we would vote on a new photo editor every year, the two questions that we always asked were "what is the greatest rock and roll album of all time" and "let's say you had a cityscape picture that would only work if you moved the moon a few inches. Do you move the moon?"

on the other app i see Meg Brock of the Daily Caller making a fool of herself w/r/t the Vanity Fair debacle. but what concerns me the most is this comment under the post and how little pushback she's getting from other photojournalists in the thread.

can i give a major shoutout to the folks at the Illinois State Archives, who took my shot-in-the-dark "do you maybe possibly have this obscure thing and does this obscure thing have this data" and responded with "yes, yes, and we digitized it for you for free"? 💜💜💜

reminder that hyphens suck
"in-law"; "aptly said"; "governor-elect" but "probate judge elect"; "25-gallon jug" but "25 percent full"; "post-1990" and "pre-war" but "nanoculture" and "hyperfocus"; "slow-moving van" but "red hot poker"; "jack-of-all-trades" but "flash in the pan"; "vice-chancellor" but "vice president"; etc.

i like this blog post a lot, even being outside of the tech space. being told "you make me want to reconsider my job of choice" by other freelance journos summons possibly the most uncomfortable feeling i can actively recall

really good, @jyn.dev! one for the bookmarks :)

every day i see something like this, i wonder how many reporters didn't take an introductory J-school reporting course. 'not both-sidesing issues,' 'not editorializing false dichotomies,' and 'using neutral terminology unless appropriate' are all essential topics. what the hell happened?
WTF are we doing here, BBC?

In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites.

He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.
