Next week "Mark Steel's in Town" is from Oakham.

But, no, Oakham is NOT "proudly twinned with Paris" - that is the small village of Whitwell (even if the Parisians don’t know).

In 1843 at Uppingham, an assistant to the surgeon took out the heart of a pauper lying in the dead-room at the poor-house.

He concealed it in his pocket and afterwards delivered a "lecture" upon it before the Oddfellows' lodge at a public-house.

At Barleythorpe in Rutland, Lord Lonsdale MFH erected three signs to calm traffic:
On the main road a notice was displayed, "Please drive quietly as Lord Lonsdale's stables and kennels are in front."
Further on was a placard stating, "Here they are", then one came to the polite "Thank you."
