Hi followers. If you are interested in the work my lab does, this is a great introduction
Dr. Rosie ’Anolani Alegado of the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa joins the Quality Quorum to discuss how weather, climate, and human intervention impact the microbiota to be found in human related seascapes around Hawai’i.

Australia has so much solar that it's offering everyone free electricity
Australia's extensive solar power penetration makes so much energy that the government wants to offer free electricity at peak hours.

UC to Stop Funding Systemwide Postdoc Program
Established in 1984 to encourage women and minority Ph.D.s to pursue academia, the program has attracted right-wing criticism for prioritizing diverse candidates.

I’m hearing this from many people - now is a REALLY GOOD TIME to submit proposals, to show there is persistent demand for grant funding
NSF funding allocations to divisions get adjusted based on numbers of proposals; if we opt out of submitting proposals because of threats of cuts, it can cause future years budgets to divert money out of our divisions.

Start every day with this reality:

EVERY HOUSE SEAT and 33 Senate seats are up for election in 2026. THAT must be the focus. Let’s get disciplined.

I’ll say this and then I’m gonna step back b/c 2026 IS THE ONLY NATIONAL ELECTION THAT’S IMPORTANT NOW.
No Dem presidential candidate wins w/o high Black turnout & vote.
So stop making it like Black voters are expendable or that you can serve up any candidate chosen by Pelosi, Clooney or MSM & win.

Maxine Berg shows how the “nimble fingers” stereotype first arose in the early Industrial Revolution as a way for managers to de-skill the labor of women workers. It was also used to exoticize labor of Navajo semiconductor manufacturers at Shiprock in the 60s. The term has a long sordid history.

The fantastically successful NIGMS MIRA R35 "expired" on May 17, after the most recent deadline--these removals are the most aggressive attack on American science in the current series of devastating actions 🧪
NIH moved up the expiration date for some funding opportunities, effectively *canceling* the next application date without removing it from the standard table. I can't even imagine how many people are still prepping these grants.

This is not a screenplay.

For some, these will be life or death situations. For many, these natural disasters will yield devastating loss.

We should have a FEMA ready, able and fully staffed to support the American public when it needs it most.
“I feel a little bit like Bubba from ‘Forrest Gump,’” Richardson said, according to the video. “We’ve got hurricanes, we’ve got fires, we’ve got mudslides, we’ve got flash floods, we’ve got tornadoes, we’ve got droughts, we’ve got heat waves ..”

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3
