1/ 📣 Big news! For the next 5 years I’ll be working with this amazing team @evahaifa.bsky.social Alasdair Cochrane & Bob McKay on the @wellcometrust.bsky.social funded Multispecies Mutualisms project wellcome.org/grant-fundin...

Black Mirror was bang on with the Be Right Back episode - preying on the vulnerable

To be fair there is a lot that is hopeful about how to use legal instruments. It’s very interesting 😀 will look at the paper tho, as I agree generally, it’s not good news

Really pleased to be in Hamburg for this workshop @fos-uhh.bsky.social on #Ecocide; it will be 2 days of intense & fascinating discussions. Thanks to @ecojustice.bsky.social for the invite www.zukuenfte-nachhaltigkeit.uni-hamburg.de/kolleg/newsr...

Kruger’s ‘crown prince’ back in the dock as rhino trial reaches crucial phase | News24

Thanks - I was referring to the framing in the threat assessment itself, which was then repeated by journalists.

I have taken it up with them - but here I was addressing your messaging about the report. I’m not only focused on root causes- but overlooking them risks designing ‘solutions’/responses that make things worse for the most vulnerable eg hammer refugees instead of billionaires

The methodology used in the report is not clear (nor public) explaining how the authors decided on which ecosystems constitute the biggest risk/threat if they collapse.

More in this 🧵on the risks of integrating environment & security

I have very mixed feeling about this report & the coverage it is getting. It’s good to see biodiversity loss getting attention. BUT experience in tackling #IWT shows linking biodiversity & security issues carries significant risks, often for the most vulnerable www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I constantly worry about the implications of ecological collapse- but I caution against using tired Malthusian arguments about environment & conflict. Let’s draw attention to the drivers of ecological collapse instead - tackle extreme wealth, fossil fuel companies, industrialised agriculture etc

Thanks for covering this @julietterowsell.bsky.social & @chrishavergal.bsky.social they just announced more reviews & restructures, in the middle of all this.

Thanks Amy, it’s really tough here so the support is appreciated. You are right - it’s felt like being in a washing machine for years, it just never stops

Thanks, really glad for your support ❤️

Thanks Alex - it’s brutal

Thanks - really appreciate the support

Solidarity with colleagues @sheffielducu.bsky.social at the latest example of institutional cruelty within HE.
Not an isolated case of course, but indicative of the current mismanagement within the sector and further evidence that converting mediocre academics into managers isn’t the solution.
Myself & many colleagues are facing this at Sheffield Uni - double punishment for strike action. In the midst of this, yesterday many departments got an email announcing imminent structural reviews (ie redundancies). @sheffielducu.bsky.social
The University of Sheffield has stopped paying staff.

Not for striking but for refusing to work unpaid to make up for strike days they were already docked for.

This is punishment, not negotiation. And it’s completely reckless.

Thanks Steve - totally agree 👍

Thanks Des, we remain determined, but it is brutal

Union condemns continued docking of staff pay following strike action at University of Sheffield
The University and College Union (UCU) has today condemned the lockout and withholding of staff pay at the University of Sheffield following lawful industrial action

I wrote a whole book about it - ideas of crisis & urgency can lead to more militarised and violent approaches to conservation; these ultimately undermine environmental protection & result in significant abuses

Nothing quite like a blanket email from HR to chase away the January blues. @sheffielducu.bsky.social members took lawful strike action in Nov/Dec. we were docked pay.
Now the Uni says refusal to reschedule cancelled classes results in breach of contract and 💯 pay deductions. 😡
Punished twice.
Well that’s me locked out. No pay for the foreseeable future, all because I refuse to reschedule lost teaching, for which I have already lost pay as part of the strike. Please donate to support @sheffielducu.bsky.social members like me at www.gofundme.com/f/heubvb-sup...

Please give the book a go, not just the abstract, before deciding if it is for you or not

Author composition really matters - so few editors really think about who writes in these collections. Understanding the Authorship is fundamental for political ecology. Please do read on beyond the abstract - you might just enjoy it 😀
