yes, a crucial part of the 'performative' is that it produces or materializes real effects + affects
People have worn out "performative." We often perform things that are real, you know. Posting is a kind of performance of one's politics. Performative doesn't actually mean "fake" or "empty," it just gets deployed that way. We actually need performance. Case in point: last night's performance.

Am I up & logged in at 6:30 am to get my kid a spot in after hours care for the 26-27 school year? Yes, yes I am. Parenting in the US is a non-stop sprint for appropriate childcare support.

My 13 year old looked around, saw kids from his school & was like "I'm good sitting right here," 8 year old was like "I might fall - I'll stay on the carpet," & my husband took a few lumbering spins around the rink. As for me? I was cruising - you can take the girl of out Jersey and all that 😏

Promised my kid I'd take her roller skating & it's been years since I skated. I'm praying I stay on my feet and don't break something 🫣

I do a fair amount of national level service - I am almost always the only Black person on the call (w/the obvious exception of work w/affinity groups). Even all these years in - it remains and remains notable.
