the funny (not funny) thing is this is a fundamental bit of knowledge that black and brown folks in the US carry with them—often because we’re the ones against whom this is often ‘weaponized’
One thing the NYC mayoral race underscored for me is how easily the phrase "I don't feel safe" can be weaponized. It's an argument I would hesitate ever to use again, even for a good cause. I hope we can all agree that we have the right to BE safe. Maybe we should leave it at that.

Middle school band performances will renew your hope in humanity - the kids are earnest and entertaining and up there jamming. They're a gift.
Last night I watched about 100 middle school musicians rip an orchestra cover of Thriller, complete with zombie dancers in the aisles.
Whatever eventually remains of this civilization, I hope it’s half as good as that.

Metformin has been shown to reduce the risk of Long COVID. Why isn’t it more widely used? - The Sick Times
Recent studies add evidence to a prior phase 3 clinical trial, suggesting that taking the diabetes drug during acute COVID-19 reduces the risk of long-term symptoms.

Had to teach a (relatively) math heavy lecture on developing scales in my grad level ethnographic methods class. The students were ambivalent at best about the material but they *clapped* for me when I finished lecturing. Made my whole week 🥹♥️

This is wildly spot on. I have (too) many examples of the fact that Black women do friendship very differently. Once you are in the circle of friendship - you are handled with a kind of care that is very culturally specific

There's a tiktok begging kids to get back in their garages to make music - someone commented "No one has a garage any more" - truer words have never been spoken 😔
makes me weep to think of the gifts robbed from us because unaffordable housing has made it difficult for people to pursue their passions and hobbies

I'm having a hard time sitting with this - Please keep Jamaica in your prayers or whatever it is you do.
Jamaica, in particular, will likely suffer catastrophic impacts from now rapidly-intensifying (but slow-moving) Hurricane #Melissa. A *Category 5* landfall now appears to be the most likely outcome, & 30-40+ inches of *additional* rain in mountains will lead to extreme flooding.

to other East Asians, genomic comparisons suggest that the Jomon derived most of their
ancestry from a deep lineage ...
