say it again:

4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities

ROI for NIH and NSF for local economies is conservatively 4x, often close to 10x

demolishing higher education is economic sabotage
There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university.

University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.

The federal government is exiting stage left for science, which means American scientists need support from other sectors to bridge us to a more sane time.

We need to communicate the impact of this on the future of the country in every interaction we have- grocery store, school pick up line, etc
It’s the end of American leadership in science.
Exclusive: National Science Foundation staff were told today that the agency’s 37 divisions—across all eight directorates—are being abolished and the number of programs within those divisions will be drastically reduced.

The pace and repetition of the onslaught is meant to make us feel despair.

Unity through shared commitment to discovery is vital.

Let's launch a network of public impact of research talks across the country.

The federal government is abdicating its responsibilities to research. Research investment has not kept up with inflation & as such the US's most important export- #highered & #research- has begun to lag. We now risk more than market share, we risk generations of life changing work. #academicsky

If the goal is to weaken global public health and the discovery engine, this is how to start doing it.

We need to make sure non-academics understand the impact of our research on their lives- including their health, their wallets, and their ease of living! #academicsky #highered #research

Indirect costs are real costs. Universities are the last non-profit discovery engine in the country, they make societal progress. Gutting IDC shifts discovery to for profit industry and we are all worse for it. #academicsky #highered #research

Maybe 12 playoff teams is too many? Perhaps just let the defending champs get a spot in a year like this because no one is really that good! #goblue

I have been in #highered for over 20 years & I have experienced exactly 3 yrs without a budget crisis across the five institutions I've served. Perhaps we cannot expect different outcomes when all institutions fight over dwindling resources, instead of changing the minds of the public. #academicsky

Sitting through meetings to deal with all the obstacles to impact is draining. Hearing a few faculty presentations on their research- recharging! #academicsky, #highered

In the #academy we in-fight because administrators are dealing with budget shortfalls and faculty are dealing with a million demands at once. We all know our collective impact and we have competing demands, but we're in this together! #academicsky, #highered

One thing bugging me about #highered is that we keep talking on others' terms. We talk about ROI & pipelines, without grounded the conversation in impact & public good. #academicsky

Good Public Health Is Invisible
It’s only when things go wrong that you notice it. It looks like people will really notice public health in the United States quite soon.

Are degrees only worth pursuing if there is a clear job waiting on the other end? Is #highered no longer a #KnowledgeCommons? The #academy is the only discovery engine with no profit motive. Students gain & share valuable knowledge and insights in the process and contribute to society. #AcademicSky
November 19, 2024 at 2:43 PM
When we talk about ROI in #highered, we talk about the value of a degree vs. the cost to attend. This fails to account for the impact higher ed has on our communities through research and service. Student cost is only part of the equation. #academicsky

#highered, #AcademicSky, Quote: 1) a project you're working on & 2) an idea you aren't working on but keep thinking about.

1) How to lower barriers to healthcare for trans folks through better communication campaigns.
2) How to better engage in public conversations about the value of the academy.
#AcademicSky, let's get to know each other! Quote this with: 1) a project you're working on & 2) an idea you aren't working on but keep thinking about.

1) How did people compile books between the late C18 and early C20?
2) An article about condom retailing in mid-C19 Britain (pre-rubber condoms)

2) A Darwinian reading of the novel focused on teeth

Higher education needs to grapple with
eroding public trust. As we examine ways to better tell the narrative of transformation I believe higher ed offers, we must remember that if we allow the rhetorical field to be set by those who wish to damage higher ed, then we have already lost. #highered
