Retrieval practice is both necessary and insufficient. This week’s essay explores the tension between the zeal of retrievalism and the philosophical worry that recall tells us nothing about truth. open.substack.com/pub/daviddid...
The limits of retrieval practice
Why retrieval practice strengthens memory, why it cannot explain learning on its own, and why both extremes miss the point

I reckon easily half of difficult conversations with families about attendance include a parent saying "you only care about your figures".
I'm sure this'll help no end 🙄

Such a massive misunderstanding of the issue.

Things that the AI target would obviously need to consider yet just as obviously won't:
*Number of pupils with major medical needs
*Number of pupils on reduced timetables at the request of local authorities because no proper specialist provision is available

*Number of pupils where parents have effectively withdrawn them while awaiting appropriate SEND provision but pupil is kept on role for safeguarding reasons
*Number of pupils where doctors hands signed vague letters advising that they need not attend school for a period

I wonder if *anyone* at the DfE gave any thought to how this balances with the desire for schools to be more inclusive overall, because there are some clear contradictions to weigh here

It’s whether you put your carrots in a tureen to serve them, or whether you dish them up straight from the saucepan.
Could someone explain to me what is meant when a British person refers to "the middle class" ? Like, in the US, as I hear it, it basically just means a person who makes a certain amount of money, not too far below and not wildly above the median. Seems like a complex concept when UK writers use it?
