Techbro capitalism has turned into an approximation of Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.

Diseased of mind, utterly immoral, barely coherent and entirely consumed by malice.

i know it's just advertisement but it still pisses me off when tech CEOs claim AGI will solve humanity's problems with its vast intelligence. for a lot of problems we already know the solutions, what prevents them being solved is not a lack of intelligence, but that the solutions are unprofitable

the speed at which these guys have broken everything has given a lot of folks who should know better the impression that they are an unstoppable force and the only option is to negotiate the terms of surrender

just because the clown car goes very fast does not mean it isn’t full of clowns
Whatever the immediate fallout of the scandal, what is going to stick around is the impression it gives, of hapless idiots doing ridiculous things. And I think that seriously reduces the appeal of capitulating to these jokers.

Andreessen Horowitz hiring Daniel Perry exemplifies what debates over preferential treatment are really all about. White men are actually rewarded professionally and personally by other white men for their willingness to commit acts of violence against people who threaten white male dominance.

I've been researching the idea of Unconditional Universal Basic Income since 2013. Here's a collection of findings I've compiled from various UBI experiments and studies of cash transfer programs around the world.

This will be a VERY LONG and ongoing thread focused entirely on empirical evidence. 🧵

What we need is another UBI experiment, but it never ends and it's funded by a wealth tax
there have been thousands of "UBI test runs" and every single one shows massive benefits, but we just need one more to be sure before we know

What we are seeing play out in the UK, in ever more extreme forms, is class war. The war being waged by the rich against the poor.

The fact that people take car-related deaths as an inescapable fact of life, even as an inevitable baseline ("you still drive" as a justification for other risky behavior) is a great success of decades of lobbying and normalization of what is a tragic and preventable state of affairs.

I suppose it’s a sign of the times that when I read that Oliver Dowden has warned Brits to stock up on candles and torches, I don’t automatically think power cuts are looming; I automatically think he’s mates with someone who imports candles from Myanmar and he’s got shares in Duracell.

It was always obvious that the Conservative government’s concern wasn’t really about academic freedom or free speech on campus, but about protecting certain kinds of speech from certain academics, while creating the conditions for further government intervention in higher education.
Government prepared secret dossier on academic’s posts on BLM, 'militant leftism', Israel war
'Highly disturbing' revelations raise serious questions about free speech, says University and College Union

Has anyone looked into the mental health of politicians, & how best to tackle problems? The role of MPs seems to attract those with poor mental health &/or provides the conditions for worsening it, while there isn't much in the way of support for those suffering. Which isn't good for them or us.

They sound so defeated.
