I did not have insider knowledge. I have just been around Brussels negotiations for a long time...

EU agrees a mandate for UK negotiations as I predicted. With the bonus that the future path becomes clearer - if you pay you can have more. www.politico.eu/article/uk-s...

Mamdani: “Fingers bruised from lifting boxes on the warehouse floor, palms calloused from delivery bike handlebars, knuckles scarred with kitchen burns. These are not hands that have been allowed to hold power”

Directed at NY’s service economy, was modern, vivid(if speech was a bit grand in places)

Excl: The driver of the train who made the emergency stop in Huntingdon, Andrew Johnson, told ITV News tonight that he was “just doing my job”.

But he surely saved lives.

He says the member of LNER staff still in hospital with life-threatening injuries “was the brave one”.

Unison gen sec Christina McAnea is asked if Keir Starmer will still be PM after the May locals: “Who knows? I don’t know.”

“I don’t know because I don’t know what will happen in May, & depending on what happens in May, what Keir will feel & what Lab MPs will feel about it.”

The question now is how Lucy Powell will use her position, given there is a budget within weeks & local elections next year which could be dreadful for Labour

I thought absolutely nobody from the cabinet would have a chance in this election. This is an exceptional showing for Bridget. And the fact that both candidates were fairly moderate and the ‘leadership’ candidate nearly won a sign that the Labour has substantially changed from the late 2010s
Lucy Powell wins deputy leadership
Lucy Powell - 87,407 votes (54%)
Bridget Phillipson - 73,536 votes (46%)

A fair bit closer than predicted

The 16% turnout figure is quite significant. Very low engagement. Suggests Labour members are downing tools rather than being driven by anger with the leadership

Exclusive: No10 chief of staff Morgan McSweeney addressed a meeting of Labour peers on Wednesday night. It did not go well, for him or Keir Starmer.

There has to come a point where polls are treated with more scepticism and editors demand more in-depth reporting on the ground (which Will excels at btw)
Massive Caerphilly by-election poll!

Survation/Camlas poll makes it a two horse race:

Reform 41.61%
PC 38.29%
Lab 12.37%
Con 3.65%
LD 1.35%
Green 2.72%

Labour previously had an 18 point majority here and 46% of the vote.

The Tory vote has collapsed. 70% of their voters now going to Reform.
